INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger writes: As only a few reports have arrived yet, I have sent my draft Bulletin to Alex Pickwell early. I'll put any late reports into next week's Bulletin. Alex is an LNU trustee and member of Executive Committee. He is giving Mailchimp a try, managing the layout and mailing procedure, with a view to helping with that task when I "retire". The plan is Phil Porter will take on the editing. They will be glad of any contributions you send in. I shall be "lurking in the background" to offer any support/help that may be needed. The LNU AGM takes place on 16th March and Members should by now have received the details by email or by post. We are hoping for a good turn out. The Exec. Committee will appreciate your support. The meeting will also be available online via "Zoom". Details in the mailing. Thanks to all who sent in news, reports and contributions this week. Roger old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Note - my best address for emails. Phil's email is:philporterento@outlook.com Stuart Britton has kindly sent in the following interesting piece of Siskins. Thanks. MARKET RASEN "There have recently been reports of Siskins cropping up all over the county where they have rarely been seen before. I have been monitoring and ringing Siskins in the Market Rasen area since 1988. Some years I don't see any and other years a considerable number, mainly in March and April. This year I have ringed over 100 this month in either Osgodby Woods, Market Rasen or Kirmond le Mire. In addition, Martin Sizer has ringed an unprecedented number in a garden site adjacent to Kenwick Park Golf Course since the end of January. Over the years we have caught birds previously ringed in Norway, Belgium and over 20 to and from Scotland as well as other parts of the UK. The only one so far this year was a first year male ringed on 7/1/2024 at Hamshaugh, Northumberland and caught at Louth on 25/1/2024 some 234 km. South-east!  We now have confirmed breeding records from the Willingham Forest area so we expect to see more Siskins at different times of the year.`` *** Weather News and Forecast *** https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/ https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#? 10-19 March 2024 "Rather cloudy across much of the UK on Sunday with outbreaks of rain for many areas, some of this heavy at times. This rain will probably clear to the west or southwest later in the day, with mainly dry conditions developing for most areas at the start of next week. From midweek onward, rain or showers begin to become more likely in the south at times, perhaps accompanied by strong winds in places. It will probably stay drier and brighter across the north, although still with a few showers in places. Temperatures are most likely to be close to normal overall, but mild at times in the south and perhaps a little colder than normal in the north. Approximately x8 hares in total, possibly more. As they were running fast and chasing each other, going in and out of a small copse of trees, it wasn't possible to say if we were seeing the same two or three hares each time! Only 4 seen at once. Mary managed to get some good photos of their antics. Also around: x3 buzzards x5 fieldfares x2 + robins Approx x6 skylarks singing At least 6 reed buntings x4 yellowhammers x1 song thrush singing near farm buildings x6 whooper swans flying low along riverbank Various crows in the distance. Small flock of house sparrows near the buildings BLANKNEY Phil and Mary Porter 3rd March 2024 TF 080598 Mary has been determined to get some good views of "Mad March" hares this year, and to this end we went down to the Blankney "Stepping Out Walks" as we had heard there were plenty of hares in the fields around and about. The weather was very dull and misty, but the hares were definitely there, if rather a long way away from the path. Binoculars were definitely needed! The hedgerows surrounding the fields seemed quite quiet, and most birdsong and sightings were in the area surrounding the car park and the road. The hares themselves were concentrating on eating, with not much running about let alone courting. We guessed finer weather might perhaps get them in the mood! Hares x20+ Red kite x1 Long tailed tits heard Robin x1 Muntjac deer x1 Magpie x2 Woodpigeons A very quiet, fast, short, "light" woodpecker drumming was reminiscent of a lesser spotted woodpecker, but neither of us saw anything. We might have to go back and have a good look! HORKSTOW SE987179 Jenny Haynes 5 March 2024 A brambling was spotted on one of our feeders this morning. It was close to t he house and I was able to appreciate just what a pretty bird it is. Other birds seen on the same feeder this morning were: great tit, blue tit, coal tit, long- tailed tit, robin, chaffinch, greenfinch and goldfinch. In addition a few house sparrows were on another feeder and blackbirds were also in the garden. NETTLEHAM Brenda Edlington TF 005756 20/2/2024 An adult hedgehog was caught on camera 3 times. The 3rd time at 11.25pm it was carrying what looked like a large sycamore leaf. Temp 4°C. 1/3 and 2/3 /2024 hedgehog caught on camera. 3/3/2024 0°C. I moved the camera and caught it twice coming out of a nest box that has never been used before at 6.55 and 7.21pm. Hopefully young hogs will follow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4.
