INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Editor writes: It’s interesting to notice that there was what sounds like a very reasonable butterfly transect count of 468 at Rimac recently. Notwithstanding a very slight increase on 24th July, the Porter garden at Bardney is still vastly underpopulated by all sorts of insects despite being full of a wide variety of nectar-bearing flowers. In time someone will suggest an explanation. Anderby Creek received a flying visit from the very rare American, Franklin’s gull during the last week. As a lapsed birder, I have much admiration for the observers who can pick out such an unexpected bird in flight amongst black-headed gulls. Thursday 25th July - Tuesday 6th August Headline: Patchy cloud, sunny spells and isolated showers Thursday Largely cloudy for much of Thursday, but brightening up through the morning. A few showers are expected in the afternoon, perhaps continuing into the evening. Maximum temperature 22 °C. Outlook for Friday to Sunday Sunny spells and daytime showers expected Friday and Saturday, perhaps heavy at times on Saturday. Dry Sunday with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures around average with light winds throughout. UK long range weather forecast Sunday 28th July - Tuesday 6th August A good deal of fine and dry weather across the UK on Sunday with spells of sunshine across most parts and temperatures close to or slightly above normal. Into the week that follows, a more changeable pattern will probably become established, at least for a time. This is likely to see showers or perhaps some longer spells of rain interspersed with intervals of dry, bright weather. Regional details are uncertain, but the wettest weather will probably be across northern and western areas, with the south and east somewhat drier. Some outbreaks of heavy rain or thunderstorms are also possible at times. Temperatures during this period will probably be close to average or slightly above average. *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers *** Noctilucent clouds https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/space-astronomy/noctilucent-clouds Meteor Season: There are several Meteor Showers this month: The Delta Aquariids meteor shower is active from 12 July to 23 August https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/delta-aquariid-meteor-shower-2024-when-where-see-it-uk The Perseid meteor shower is active between 17 July and 24 August https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/perseid-meteor-shower-guide-uk-when-where-to-see This Week's Sky at a Glance: https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/sky-at-a-glance/ Night Sky - highlights:. https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/blogs/astronomy Full Moons https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/full-moon-calendar Meteor shower dates https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/meteor-shower-guide BBC Sky at Night Magazine website https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news *** EVENTS *** *** Lincolnshire Naturalists Union Field Meeting *** Horncastle Riverscape Enhancement Project – Sunday 18th August 2024 Horncastle 11.00 for 12.00 start and finish about 16.00. BARDNEY - THE GREEN TF120694 R + A Parsons 16/7/2024 Suede Bolete - Xerocomus subtomentosus. First few of the year. In lawn in No Mow May area. 17/72024 6-8 Swifts low over Silver Street, near No12, calling excitedly and swooping to house eves. Chicks fledging? Today we noted signs of flying ants in the garden - another contributing factor? 8-9 swifts later seen in flight high above the area and over the garden Meadow Brown and several small and medium sized "White" butterflies noted in garden. No wasps, few bees. 21/7/2024 - 11am. Designated day for our Big Butterfly Count. Not great. Red Admiral 1, Comma 1, Small White 4, Large White 2, Meadow Brown1. BARDNEY GARDEN TF117700 Phil and Mary Porter Week 19th-24th July The garden stumbled through another week of insect poverty with a cast of a few white butterflies, meadow browns and gatekeepers, but also including the odd peacock which had been absent lately, peaking at 4 on 24th when there was also a Red Admiral. Dragonflies have also been absent except for a newly-emerged Common Darter on 22nd. I noticed a few Anthomyia procellaris flies occasionally, like tiny ‘house flies’ with a noticeable pattern of pale grey and black on the thorax once you have fixed on them. The highlight on 24th was an orange ladybird Halyzia sedecimguttata indoors which was suddenly tickling my hand as I was washing. On the 24th, Mary found the domed silken nest of a nursery web spider with the adult lurking beneath. A great spotted woodpecker put in another isolated garden appearance on 22nd, and on the 20th there were 20 screaming swifts over the village centre. HORKSTOW SE987179 Jenny Haynes Monday 15 July 2024 For the first time in several weeks, butterflies (well, a few) in my garden. Several small whites, small tortoiseshell, and a ringlet. While cutting the verge which I’d left for the grasses to flower, I disturbed a frog, about half size. 16 July 2024 While walking through the village this evening, something on the pavement caught my eye. On taking a closer look, it was a small, live, mole, about 5 centimetres long. I picked it up and put it under some bushes. I can’t guess what it was doing on the pavement or how it got there. It’s only the second mole I’ve seen. 19 July 2024 While walking around the Ropewalk in Barton, I noticed a large, pinky/brown caterpillar on me. It turned out to be that of a Puss Moth. Said caterpillar was hastily deposited beneath some shrubs! No idea how it got on me! 22 July 2024 Butterflies still few and far between. Red Admiral, a couple of small whites and two Ringlets seen today. To manage visitor numbers, we are going to need to limit non-licenced visitors to around 10 people, and will require those who are interested in joining each session to email through to 'sign-up' no later than a week before each session. Please email lincsdormouse group@gmail.com if you are interested in joining us. The last summer date we so far have approved with FE for nest box checks is: Saturday 17th August As always for the summer sessions, we will meet at 9.30am, and this will be outside the wood centre in the car park, but this may need to change. Looking forward to another dormouse filled summer! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The NNR includes the following sites: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chambers Farm Woods (comprises Ivy Wood; Little and Great Scrubbs Woods; Minting Wood; Hatton Wood, Hatton Plantation and Minting Park; and also three areas of grassland: Little Scrubbs Meadow and extension), Small Meadow and Big Meadow.
