INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Editor [Roger this week] writes: I am standing in for Phil Porter as editor this week. It's a pleasure to do that. It has been great to see how smoothly Phil and Alex got things up and running. A big thank you goes to all contributors, who week after week send in news, observations, details of events and useful links. This makes an editor's job so much easier. Mondays and Tuesdays can be a frenzy as it all comes together. Phill should be back editing next week. If you are not a member of the LNU remember you are very welcome to come along to Field Meetings to meet and get to know some of our experts and enthusiasts. .All were beginners once and there is a lot, a lifetime's worth of knowledge, to discover and enjoy. Come along. I've had Covid this week, which has been an unpleasant experience. It's worth bearing in mind it is still around and increasing somewhat. I've been recovering in bed, in the evening, bat detector on window sill enjoying the charming racket of local bats hunting and interacting. We will have to be careful and aware. Enjoy your Bulletin. Roger Phil Porter's email is: philporterento@outlook.com Roger Parsons' email is: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bob Sheppard's Blog: We have had another tale of woe from the Scottish ospreys. Following the demise of the Loch of Lowes nest when the male disappeared, we switched our allegiance to the nest at Loch Arkaig. Unfortunately the male was having difficulty bringing enough fish to the two chicks. The decision was made to remove the chicks from the nest under licence and trans- locate them to Spain as part of a planned exercise involving chicks from other Scottish nests. The full story can be read here. https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/osprey-cam/?ht-comment-id=15225467 The Len Pick Trust owl chicks are now nearly nine weeks old and have left the nest chamber on the next stage of their journey to independence. We look forward to reporting from the tower in 2025. Last Wednesday all three peregrine chicks ledged successfully from St James's Church, Louth. The cameras will be live again next spring Warmest thanks to Bob for his intriguing and informative posts. Much appreciated. Sunny spells too. Into the following week, further cloud and rain bearing weather systems are likely to move into at least the west of the UK, accompanied by stronger winds at times, continuing the recent changeable theme However, there are tentative signs that further into next week, conditions may begin to gradually turn a bit more settled, at least for a time. This particularly so across eastern parts, with temperatures more widely trending back up to average and then potentially above average as the week progresses. *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers *** Spaceweather.com NOAA forecasters say that G1 class geomagnetic storms are possible on July 3rd when a CME is expected to graze Earth's magnetic field. https://spaceweather.com/ Heads up for Noctilucent Clouds - they are being reported. https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/space-astronomy/noctilucent-clouds Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2024 shortlist revealed! https://www.rmg.co.uk/whats-on/astronomy-photographer-year/galleries/2024-shortlist?f24_pid=c31dabb0-06c7-4d2e-bd99-3e8da31945b0 This Week's Sky at a Glance: https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/ Night Sky - highlights:. https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/blogs/astronomy Full Moons https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/full-moon-calendar Meteor shower dates https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/meteor-shower-guide BBC Sky at Night Magazine website https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news *** EVENTS *** *** Lincolnshire Naturalists Union Field Meeting *** Belton Park, Saturday 13th July 2024 Northeast of Grantham, Courtesy of Belton Estate 11.00 for 12.00 start and finish approx 16.00. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact the editor: Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP], Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with unwise or untimely publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions of the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
