INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor writes; A splendid fireball was seen over a wide area – National news! Only the occasional butterfly reported so far, perhaps more might have been expected in the ridiculously mild weather? The younger generations don’t realise just how cold it used to be sometimes. Will the rain ever stop? At least it’s falling mainly at night! This week's mostly-local news stories: Boothby Wildland Project near Grantham could become ‘thriving ecosystem’ after new Biodiversity Net Gain rules introduced for developers https://www.lincsonline.co.uk/grantham/news/wildland-project-could-become-thriving-ecosystem-9353100/ Stamford Climate Action Group look at the impact of what we eat on the environment https://www.lincsonline.co.uk/stamford/news/we-should-focus-on-what-we-eat-to-have-an-impact-on-climate-9353115/ Cranes: why Britain’s tallest bird just had its best breeding year since the 1600s https://theconversation.com/cranes-why-britains-tallest-bird-just-had-its-best-breeding-year-since-the-1600s-176103 Fireball spotted in sky over Lincolnshire and Yorkshire - spot the murmuration! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-lincolnshire-68345843 Village creates by-law to try to stop lorries using cut through https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c72gy9lxp9ko Walkers forced to trespass onto open access countryside https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-68278444 Caribbean WWII veteran celebrates 100th birthday https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-68341166 Visitors concern over condition of country park https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy95ew5ql4zo More links in "...and finally ..." at the end of the Bulletin. It's also likely to be windy at times, and there is a small chance that it could be quite stormy, so probably worth keeping an eye on the forecast. A generally unsettled pattern is most likely to continue through to early March bringing spells of rain across all areas at times, wettest in the west and northwest, where it'll be windy too at times. Temperatures generally around average though some short-lived colder interludes are possible. These more likely in the north which may allow snow to fall to lower levels at times. *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers *** February’s Night Sky; Highlights https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/blog/astronomy/night-sky-highlights-february-2024 Full Moons 2024 https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/full-moon-calendar RMG Meteor shower dates 2024 https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/meteor-shower-guide BBC Sky at Night Magazine website https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news Brightest and hungriest black hole ever detected https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-68346725 *** EVENTS *** *** Grimsby and Cleethorpes Area Group LWT *** Carolyn Davis writes… "A Year in Nature 2023" On Monday 11th March 2024 the group will hold their next indoor meeting when excellent photographer and speaker, Mike Pickwell will take us through a year in nature with photographs and tales from 2023. Having taken some pictures she emailed David Sheppard saying it looked very bedraggled and seemed too small for a queen of the common bumblebees and much too early to be a worker. She left it with a snack of watered- down plum jam and it had gone later. David replied that it was an Early Bumblebee Bombus pratorum and that the rather long hair of this species is probably what made it seem bedraggled. 20th February About 200 fieldfares circled over the garden before heading north.
