INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Editor writes: It's nice to see the possibly 1,000-year-old Bowthorpe Oak with a very honourable mention in the ‘Tree of the Year’ article in our ‘local news stories’ below and given the pressures that our general green fabric is under, I am always surprised to be reminded that, here in Britain, we have the richest stock of remaining ancient trees in the whole of Western Europe. It’s a pity the tree does not stand in a more natural context and I think that this is why I have to admit that I have never set out to see it, but the farm near Bourne where it is protected as a visitor attraction deserves our thanks for doing so, and of course the largest trees have usually developed in hedgerow or parkland contexts away from too much competition. So Good Luck to the Bowthorpe Oak!! East Midlands weather forecast Thursday 29th August - Sunday 1st September Thursday: A bright and rather breezy day on Thursday with a chance of a light shower. A sunny end to the day is likely, with winds easing light. Maximum temperature 22 °C. Outlook for Friday to Sunday: Turning increasingly fine to end the week with mainly dry conditions, generally light winds and variable cloud. Temperatures mostly near normal. Cooler near coasts by Saturday, with an onshore breeze. UK long range weather forecast Sunday 1st September - Tuesday 10th September High pressure will tend to be located either over or close to the UK through much of this period, leading to a more widely settled period of weather for most, with some cool nights, but near or slightly above average temperatures by day. That said, weak frontal systems could still provide some cloud and patchy outbreaks of rain at times, this most likely in northwestern areas, and there is a chance of some heavy thundery showers and more humid conditions in the south too. The mostly settled conditions are expected to then win out, with high pressure building in from the southwest once more, with the chance of seeing a more widely showery spell towards the end of this period considered low. *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers *** Sky At A Glance https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/sky-at-a-glance/ Night Sky - highlights https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/blogs/astronomy Full Moons https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/full-moon-calendar Meteor shower dates https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/meteor-shower-guide BBC Sky at Night Magazine website https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/news *** EVENTS *** *** Lincolnshire Naturalists Union Field Meeting *** Kirton Marsh NNR. – Saturday 7th September 11.00 for 12.00 start and finish about 16.00. The first appearance in the garden for several months for a Small Tortoiseshell which Mary joyfully recorded at Buddleia flowers, especially as she purchased this particular plant last year especifically for the job. A very dense, very bushy variety, recommended for its late flowering with conical heads of cerise pink looking rather like huge heads of Pyramidal Orchid, which has only just come into bloom. Also present were 3 Red Admirals and a Holly Blue. One Goldfinch has reappeared lately. 27th August 2 Small Tortoiseshell on the Buddleia today, a Red Admiral and a small party of Long-tailed Tits passed through. 3 Robins singing. There are still lots of birds in the garden, chaffinch, goldfinch, dunnock, great tit and blue tit, and the ubiquitous wood pigeon. WATER RAIL WAY Phil and Mary Porter 26th August A rather lovely display of Field Bindweed and Hedge Bindweed along the river bank was the main floral feature. Most other bits and pieces were flowering regrowth from grass cutting operations recently; hawksbeards, Creeping Cinquefoil, Yarrow, Nipplewort, lettuces etc. Some good clumps of Teasel heads signal feeding opportunities for Goldfinches. In the river Witham a few remaining Yellow Water-lily flowers provided a dash of colour. Down by the Engine Drain footbridge Amphibious Bistort mixed with the similar Redshank in damp soil. The channel was covered with mats of Broad-leafed Pondweed as usual. A couple of Migrant Hawkers worked the airspace over the drain, while a Brown Hawker or two and a Southern Hawker seemed happier up on the top of the river bank, with a sprinkling of Common Darters in both niches. In the abandoned ‘pollinator patch’ near the pumping station, Horse Radish had become dominant in several patches, a plant that I find hard to love although it can attract insects when in flower. A Cetti’s Warbler chimed up in thick riverside vegetation and fresh Nettle growth hosted the gall of the midge Dasineura urticae. Mary heard some Grasshoppers stridulating and found a Comma butterfly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4.
