Wintry showers, and strong winds are likely into northern and eastern areas, with the risk of overnight frosts increasing through the weekend. Into next week, an east-west split in weather conditions is most likely. The west will have more chance of seeing, milder conditions; cloud, with patchy rain and drizzle, while further east, colder, drier and brighter conditions with blustery wintry showers will likely persist. It is uncertain how prolonged this cold spell with be, but likely that through this period, milder, more unsettled conditions from the west will gradually replace the colder air." *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers *** Full Moons 2023 https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/full-moon-calendar November's Night Sky: Highlights https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/blog/astronomy/night-sky-highlights-november-2023 *** Grimsby and Cleethorpes Area Group LWT *** Carolyn Lovely writes: “Birds and Wildlife of the Western Cape Province of South Africa”. We rely on readers to send in their observations and welcome records from everyone, experts or beginners. Please keep your reports coming. BARDNEY - THE GREEN TF120694 R + A Parsons 17 Black-headed gulls on Church - regular local foragers. 2 Blue Tits Robin 30+ Starling flock – regular BARDNEY GARDEN TF117700 Phil and Mary Porter 15th-21st November 2023 Mild days throughout this week have seen at least one buff-tailed queen bumblebee regularly visiting the garden, mostly visiting a miniature fuchsia shrub, whose tiny flowers seem invaluable. One red admiral butterfly has also been present, whenever it hasn't been raining. It has spent a lot of time around the large-leaved variegated ivy (along with various flies and one wasp) which seemed to have gone to seed but must still be producing some nectar.  The peacock butterfly which had been resting in our dining room for about four weeks woke up and was found fluttering around the conservatory on a sunny day. Mary managed to catch it and thought she would put it by the ivy in the sunshine, but it started shivering and slipped down towards the ground. An emergency rescue remedy of diluted honey was offered and after only a few sips, it flew up and over the ivy in the sunshine.  Small skeins of pink-footed geese have been noticed most days, flying overhead. The bird feeders have been busy with many goldfinches, some chaffinches, a few greenfinches, blue tits, great tits and long-tailed tits. We normally see coal tits at this time of the year, but sadly have seen none. There is a blackbird defending the berries on the cotoneaster bush at the front of the house. The goldfinches have discovered the teasel heads. It's most satisfying to watch them feeding naturally. A male sparrowhawk spent most of one day having several passes along the bird feeders, putting the birds off. It didn't appear to have been successful. A pair of wood pigeons are still "courting" and, after a brief lull, we have two collared doves. They don't normally last long, due to the sparrow hawks. Magpies, jackdaws and one crow, have paid regular visits to the bird tables. At least one wren and one dunnock feed amongst the undergrowth. The robins are singing well. There appear to be two territories. CHAMBERS FARM WOOD TF146742 Phil & Mary Porter 20th November A Hazel bush with several buds swollen by the gall of mites of Phytoptus coryli, obviously a bit larger than healthy buds and appearing a bit chalky. We only noticed one bush so affected. On the same walk, a small number of catkins were distorted. This was probably the effect of another mite Phyllocoptes coryli, although a midge species causes a less untidy gall.
