INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor writes: In spite of my warning last week I have puzzled some readers by running late! I had said:"Next week's Bulletin will be delayed. I will not be starting work on it before 29th June." Added to this I had a catastrophic failure of my local network this week, which prevented me receiving and thanking you for all your contributions. Hopefully we are back to normal here now. The Big Butterfly Count will begin on Friday 15th July 2022 and run until Sunday 7th August. https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/ Please continue to stay informed on about Co-19 and 'flu, adapting appropriately to future changes at indoor meetings and in the field. Len Pick Trust Barn Owls - a note from Bob Sheppard. The Len Pick Trust barn owl camera has shown us some interesting barn owl behaviour. During the recent hot spells the chicks have been very subdued. They pant like a dog to cope with the heat. https://www.lenpicktrust.org.uk/owl-project Loch of Lowes Osprey Webcam - a note from Bob Sheppard. The Loch of Lowes ospreys continue to thrive. The Scottish Wildlife Trust have posted another fascinating blog again this past week. "We've recently passed the longest day of the year, during which the ospreys were able to rely on a remarkable 20 hours of daylight. Long summer days and abundant fishing opportunities are among the reasons that Perthshire has become such a stronghold for ospreys. Life on the nest is going well and despite the sad recent loss of the youngest chick, the two oldest chicks are thriving. Yesterday LM12 set a new record for the number of fish brought to the nest. He caught ten fish in a single day, while also fending off five intruders. No mean feat! It won't be too much longer before the chicks take their first tentative flights from the nest. We've already seen them stretch and flap their developing wings. Please keep tuned to the webcam to follow the progress of these amazing birds." https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/watch-wildlife-online/loch-of-the-lowes-webcam/ Gibraltar Point Bird Observatory blog: http://gibraltarpointbirdobservatory.blogspot.co.uk/ Lincs Bird Club: https://www.lincsbirdclub.co.uk/site/index.php/sightings/latest-news Butterfly Conservation - Lincolnshire Branch: https://butterfly-conservation.org/in-your-area/lincolnshire-branch/ Which moth species might be on the wing tonight in your area? HORKSTOW SE987179 23 June 2022 Jenny Haynes Having found a 'hole' in the vegetation under a hedge, we set up a camera trap to see who might be visiting and not only filmed a fox, which had been suspected but also a badger! Although there have been a couple of road kills nearby in the past few years and there is some evidence of what look like historic setts on the hill at the back of the village, I've never heard of them being nearby. I just hope they don't take a fancy to taking up residence! HORKSTOW SE987179 27 June 2022 Jenny Haynes Brimstone moth spotted in my garden. I managed to take a photo to help identification! Daily news and wildlife sightings: Note: Kestrel attacking barn owl. During the evening of the 24th 2 barn owls were actively hunting and carrying prey in the Sea View area. On one occasion a barn owl flew by with a prey item to be suddenly attacked by a kestrel. The kestrel, calling, swooped underneath the barn own and robbed it of its prey. As the kestrel flew off the prey, which looked like a rat, was dropped by the bird into scrub and not recovered which gives the impression the prey was too heavy to carry. By this time the barn owl had flown off. 220622 - Crossbill calling at Sea View. 230622 - Paradise lagoon: 9 redshank, 10 lapwing, 13 avocets and a great spotted woodpecker flying overhead with another bird near Sea View. 5 green sandpipers at Sea View washland, barn owl and kestrel hunting over the area. Comma and hummingbird hawkmoth on the wing at Sea View. Common pipistrelle hunting over Sea View. 240622 - Paradise lagoon: 15 lapwing, common snipe amongst the avocets. Sea View washlands: 3 young lapwing and adult feeding, 4 green sandpipers, 4 teal and 2 shoveler. 270622 - Paradise lagoon: 21 lapwing. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
