Len Pick Trust Barn Owls - a note from Bob Sheppard. The Len Pick Trust barn owl webcam shows four very lethargic chicks in this mini heatwave. They are growing fast and the calm, dry nights have been good for hunting. Both adults are out every night now as the chicks no longer need brooding. https://www.lenpicktrust.org.uk/owl-project Loch of Lowes Osprey Webcam - a note from Bob Sheppard. The Loch of Lowes ospreys lost one of their chicks on 15th as expected. Their blog reported "Sadly the youngest chick at Loch of the Lowes died this morning following an attack by its older sibling. Unfortunately the continued aggressive behaviour, which began after a sudden drop in fish deliveries, meant it was becoming increasingly unlikely that the smallest chick would survive." ALFORD TF454754 David Sheppard 19th and 20th June 2022 Hummingbird Hawkmoth (Macroglossum stellatarum) nectaring on Red Valerian in garden. BARDNEY - The Green R & A Parsons TF120694 20/6/2022 Fresh Hedgehog droppings for first time since early June. 21/6 Hedgehog on trailcam: 00.12 to 0056 hrs. Good news! 22/6 Lengthy vigorous bathing by local pigeon - what a performance! Hedgehog on camera - 02.21hrs BOSTON GARDEN (TF326426) 19/06/2022 Kathleen Pearson Humming-bird Hawkmoth in garden today on Valerian. Another in the front garden earlier in the week. CARLTON LE MOORLAND Carlton le Moorland SK909581 Jeremy Hutchinson 12/6/2022 Very large Hedgehog roadkill. 18/6/22 Hummingbird Hawk Moth(s) began visiting the Valerian in our garden, only one seen at a time until 19th June when two have been seen on several occasions, which is a first for us. What fascinating little creatures these are. On 19th June we got up to find a pile of Fox droppings on our back lawn, which is unusual. Although there was no visible evidence of this in the droppings, I suspect that it might have been scavenging cherries from the tree close by. 20/6/2022 Male Kestrel seen mobbing a Buzzard which was returning to the usual nesting tree (Oak). I haven't seen much activity around this tree for a while, but as the Buzzard landed the cry of young clamouring to be fed could be heard, confirming that breeding has taken place. On my allotment near to the village pond I found what appeared to be a newly- emerged Southern Hawker dragonfly on a Blackcurrant bush: most imposing. Shortly afterwards I saw a Skipper,(first this year), female Small Skipper I think. Very early morning and at dusk, Barn Owl flying over garden on same bearing, but in opposite direction. I saw one at the local nest box which Barn Owls have used in recent years, so it appears that nesting has happened again this year. 21/6/22 The number of Hoverflies has increased exponentially in the last couple of days, which is good. ELSHAM Angela Buckle. 14th June 2022 Elsham Quarry: Wall lettuce, Cleavers, Black bryony, Stinking iris, Twayblade, Ploughmans spikenard, Yellow rattle, Black medic, Dog rose, Common spotted orchid, Fairy flax, Scarlet pimpernel, Meadow cranesbill, Smooth hawksbeard, Common vetch, Water figwort, Comfrey, Musk mallow, Vipers bugloss, Hedge woundwort, Bee orchid, Great mullian, Weld, Butterfly. Red admiral, and Meadow brown. FAR INGS Angela Buckle. 19th June 2022 Far Ings: Agrimony, Crown vetch, Ribbed melilot, Musk mallow, Yellow-wort, Ploughmans spikenard, Buttonweed, Rough-chervil, Marsh woundwort, Common knapweed, Water figwort. Butterflies. Ringlet, Meadow brown. GRIMSBY TA265095 Joyce Attia 21st June 2022 Summer Solstice It's very hot today. I walked along the river this morning and saw our swans. The cygnets are at that scruffy stage, part down and part feathers, but there are still 11 of them. Well done the parents. I haven't seen anything of the other swan family, so I don't know if there are still 10. I hope so, though they are in a busier part of the river. I didn't see many mallards either. In the back garden there have been lots of the smaller birds to the feeder, sparrows, blue tits, great tits (I think there is more than one family of great tits, the juveniles are different sizes)blackbirds, dunnocks and a robin on the ground. The bird bath is in almost constant use, I've changed the water three times today HORKSTOW SE987179 21 June 2022 Jenny Haynes I've been in my garden several times today and have not seen one bee. In fact, there were virtually no insects at all, only a couple of Meadow Brown butterflies and some flies. My garden is large and full of nectar-bearing flowers so I'm puzzled. Is anyone else experiencing this absence of flying wildlife? HORKSTOW SE 987179 19 June 2022 Jenny Haynes Clouded Border moth spotted in my garden and a Banded Demoiselle Damselfly found dead on the road outside. A Song Thrush has been singing in my garden for a few days now. KIRTON MARSH 19/06/2022 Roy and Kathleen Pearson Great Egret near bank on KIRTON Marsh this morning, standing immediately adjacent to a Grey Heron and in breeding plumage. LOW APLEY, HARDY GANG WOOD AND ADJOINING FIELDS. John Hiscox June 16th 2022. Late morning. Red Kite 3, Great Black-backed Gull 2, Buzzard 4. During a silage wrapping operation, the Kites were circling and swooping whilst being harassed and verbally abused by the Gulls. The Buzzards remained aloft and aloof. There were no landings and no sign of prey or carrion was found. Half an hour of wonderful entertainment, but why were they there? We see the occasional passing Kite, but never three at once. If you are not sure, ask what is needed from you to confirm identification. Photographs are helpful but not every species can be identified from a photograph. When asked for further details, get back to them promptly. Don't forget a thank you for the help. That is always welcomed. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
