Further north, the rest of the UK is likely to experience some sunny spells, with temperatures close to normal for the time of year. Into the beginning of next week, a cooler west or north- westerly wind will bring showers for most, and perhaps some longer spells of rain in the northwest. This unsettled weather is likely to continue for the rest of the week with most areas to see some rain, especially the north and northwest. The southeast has the best chance of experiencing some sunshine. Temperatures around normal, perhaps slightly cooler in the north with the chance of some stronger winds at times." *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers - Jupiter, Saturn and Mars...*** Jodrell Bank Monthly Night Sky Guide http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/ SkyatNight month-by-month guide to locating the planets throughout 2022 https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/skills/astronomy-guide-viewing-planets-night-sky/ Stellarium. Richard Doan will be carrying out sea watches at the North Sea Observatory on Saturday 30th July and at the Round-and-Round hide, Anderby Creek on the Sunday 31st July. The usual times are 10 - 4. Please come along for as much, or as little, as you can. You can also carry out your own sea watches at a time convenient for you. Please let us know your findings. For a copy of the NWDW report form contact: Dave Miller dmiller@lincstrust.co.uk *** Phone-only Parking Charges at Lincolnshire Coast - a reader's view *** I've had this contribution on that subject which, with their permission, I have passed to a local LCC councillor. If anyone reader wishes to comment on the subject, please do. "I was born and raised in Huttoft and have been going to Huttoft Bank ever since I was old enough to ride a bike, and even before that. I remember being carried back home on my uncle's shoulders because my little fat legs wouldn't go any further. During summer school holidays Mum used to pack up some sandwiches and a bottle of water for us kids and we used to go off to Huttoft Bank for the day. Looking at it now, how scary was that? But we all survived, though I never told her about those mudbanks where I lost my footing and nearly came to grief. Anyway to get back to the point: due to lockdown I haven't been there for a couple of years, so I rang a friend who was also raised in Huttoft and I know she is a regular visitor. I asked "Have you been to Huttoft Bank recently?" She said she had, a few weeks ago, and what a performance! She said that all the accesses to the beach from Huttoft Bank to Anderby Creek have had these parking notices put up, and the only way you can pay is by the App. This had obviously infuriated someone because the instructions about the App on the notices had been defaced on all of them. She said she couldn't download it, so they didn't get their day at the beach. Surely Lincolnshire County Council must realise that not everyone is computer literate and not everyone wants a smart phone. Another point is that Lincolnshire, especially around this area, has an elderly population, elderly people are less likely to have smart phones and one of the pleasures left to us is to take a picnic to the beach. So that pleasure is being denied by a short sighted council. I can understand that it's not wise to install cash payment machines but most people these days have bank cards, why not have a "card only" machine? My friend said she doesn't object to paying, but why does it have to be so difficult? She won't be going again 'til the winter and we will have to find somewhere else to have our picnics." *** Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Area Groups webpage *** Please let me have your "plugs" for coming events. https://www.lincstrust.org.uk/get-involved/area-groups *** Lincolnshire Pubs - a history *** Lincolnshire's coastal pubs celebrated in new exhibition https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-61428612 *** RSPB Grimsby Local Group - New Website, June Meeting and Trip *** The RSPB Grimsby Local Group has a new website, https://group.rspb.org.uk/grimsby/ The RSPB Grimsby Local Group has organised an Indoor Meeting and a Car Trip in June. All the Group's activities are open to everybody - you do not need to belong to the RSPB, or to have attended Group Meetings to take part. The Indoor Meeting will take place on Monday 20th June 2022 at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Parish Hall, Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 7LH After a short AGM, there will be a number of short contributions from members, including 'Swifts' by Joy Croot and 'Bees' by Vic Adams. Both contributions are sure to be informative and enjoyable. Entry for everybody is £4, payable at the door. Light refreshments and a raffle will be available. Measures will be taken to reduce the risk of spreading the Covid virus, and you should not attend if you are exhibiting symptoms of the virus, or have been in close contact with somebody known to have the virus. The Trip is to RSPB Frampton Marsh on Sunday 26th June. There is a Visitors' Centre (with toilets and light refreshments) and 3 hides at Frampton. LM12 is bringing fewer fish to the nest, which is leading to fierce competition between the chicks. Late evening around 22:15: Hedgehog seen. Monday 03/06/2022 I left the lawn uncut for No Mow May. Towards the end of the month, I cut pathways in order to access the borders and, as a consequence, created wildflower islands. Wildflowers flourishing today: Buttercups, Daisies, Dandelions, one clump of Lesser trefoil, White clover. Wildlife seen in recent days: Daisies were visited by a white (small or large) butterfly one day, bees and hoverflies regularly seen and woodlice in the undergrowth. I saw one on Saturday 11/6/22, and on the following day saw a single bird high over Bassingham, drifting west/ north-west into the wind in a slow glide, no wing movement whatsoever. 12/6/22 Green Woodpecker seen on the foot/cycle path to Bassingham. The bird was on the surface of the path (asphalt), and took off when I was about 50m away from it, flew low along the course of the path then up into the first roadside tree it came to. I presume that it had been after ants. FAR INGS Angela Buckle. 12th June 2022 Far Ings. GRIMSBY TA265095 Joyce Attia 14th June 2022 Grimsby in Bloom had litter pick/river bank clean last Saturday. There didn't seem to be much litter along the banks. James, the canoe river cleaner had been round a few days before, so he probably cleared most of it. Though one young lady found a loaf of bread complete with plastic bag thrown in the water. There is plenty of natural food for the wildlife at the moment, they don't need to be fed and bread is not good anyway. I haven't seen the swans lately, the mallard ducklings seem to be doing well. In the garden there have been a number of ladybirds, 5 and 7 spotted. The bees are still active, though the bells of the garlic honey flowers are closed up now, there are lots of campanula flowers which they seem to like. There have been a few small tortoiseshell butterflies, some mint moths and a sloe shield beetle. My neighbour sent a photo of a beautiful Cinnabar moth which has been visiting for a few days. The collared doves come for the birdbath and there have been sparrows, a great tit, blue tits on the feeder and male blackbirds on the ground. The cat is still around so I'm pleased that they haven't brought the young blackbirds. Male and female Great Spotted Woodpeckers regularly visit my bird feeders. I've also had a pair of Collard Doves and a Stock Dove in the green today. WOOLSTHORPE AND COLSTERWORTH Jane Ostler Week beginning Tuesday 7th June 2022 Nature Trail Area After a number of cold, wet and windy days a walk in intermittent sunshine on 9th June At the 'strawberry field', so called because it is being managed to encourage the food plant of the Grizzled Skipper Butterfly, the growth of grass is rather greater this year because of rain, but the grasses are interspersed with the hemiparasite Yellow Rattle which will help contain them. There are contrasting areas of vegetation with the Strawberry plants interspersed with St John's Worts, Ox-eye Daisies, Germander Speedwell, Eyebright and in one place there are three flowering Spikes of Common Spotted Orchid, pale in both flower colour and leaves with one plant without spotting on leaves. A small circular area marks out where two years ago brash was burnt in the surviving Rosebay Willowherb. Where scrub has been cleared back it is dominated by Stinging Nettles.. Newly emerged Small Tortoiseshells were flying in this field, where mating Grass Snakes had been disturbed on 6th June after a weekend of very heavy rain. (Over l inch in 24hrs. A Red Kite seen on top of bushes with a young bird. At the Western end of the Reserve - in the Meadow where there has in the past been a diverse grassland the mowing regime is paying dividends in the return of plants typical of older hay meadows. The Yellow Rattle has been seeded here too. Skylarks were heard in the adjacent grassland. Bees feeding included the Early Garden Bumble Bee. Butterflies were Red Admiral, Meadow Brown, Small Skipper and Speckled Wood. A photograph of one shows it with clear and typical markings but in black and white rather than the dark brown form. Where a space has been cleared to provide a track above the north facing bank it has revealed a line of wood ants nests. On the largest a Red Admiral had chosen the side tilted to catch the sun, to warm itself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
