INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor writes: Thank you to all who sent in reports and information this week. Interesting sightings, events and links, all very welcome indeed. All readers are encouraged to send in a contribution at some point - species reports, news or other information like events or talks. Even questions. Thankfully many people do send things in and it makes Bulletins much more useful and interesting, so please help if you can. I am putting together an updated list of local people or organisations that provide a reliable Wildlife Rescue service for injured creatures. It would be helpful to have informed recommendations from readers. You can email me your information on old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Please continue to stay informed on about Co-19 and 'flu, adapting appropriately to future changes at indoor meetings and in the field. If you have any event postponements or changes please let us know. Temperatures close to average, perhaps ... slightly below average in the strongest winds in the north. Mid-week onwards, the most likely scenario is for low pressure to the north of the UK to clear as high pressure builds from the west. This would generally lead to fine and dry weather across much of the UK with lighter winds than of late. However, the weather is likely to become more unsettled again towards the end of the period. ..." *** For Astronomers and Sky-watchers - Jupiter, Saturn and Mars...*** Jodrell Bank Monthly Night Sky Guide http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/ Stellarium. If you find a grounded bat please don't try and release it. Put it in an escape proof box. Remember, a pipistrelle can get out of a hole the size of your thumb nail. We parked up, and I went to pay - no cash accepted! It took over 20 mins to download the App-not one I already had on my phone, and I have a few! (poor signal and bright sunlight). I had to keep re-typing information in, getting codes from my phone, then bank - even the parking attendant asked if I was ok! My reply was, "I'm getting there!'' Imagine my shock when we returned to the car to find a parking ticket! On close inspection, I had typed a Y not a V for the reg number. It will be ok, I said - an easy mistake to make, I'll take a screen shot to prove I have paid my £1. Not to be. I'm now in the middle of a complicated process where I have to appeal (twice) before it goes to an independent body. The first appeal says that a typo is not a valid reason to appeal, but I'm persevering! The stamp on the letters cost more than my fee! I presume they will refund my parking £1 if I end up paying the fine- after all I didn't get what I paid for! *** National Whale and Dolphin Watch Weekend - 23rd and 31st July *** Dave Miller writes: National Whale and Dolphin Watch Weekend is this year being held between 23rd and 31st July. Len Pick Trust Barn Owls - a note from Bob Sheppard. The Len Pick barn owls have now hatched off all six chicks. Viewers of the webcam will have noticed a big difference in sizes. The first to hatch is now 16 days old and "Little Runty" is just 4 days. The weather has not been kind this past week with over two inches of rain in Bourne. Hunting will have been difficult for the male. Little Runty might just get eaten if the sun doesn't shine. Asynchrous hatching is a good survival mechanism, as long as you're not the last born of the clutch! Last year the owlets hatched just as the harvest got underway so lots of mice were caught. We are a long way from seeing the combine this year. Fingers crossed for a good outcome. https://www.lenpicktrust.org.uk/owl-project St James' Church, Louth - Peregrines - a note from Bob Sheppard. Noticed a crow being chased by a smaller bird who was obviously protecting a nest in the reeds. It really attacked it and wouldn't leave it. It was so persistent that we wondered if the crow had got a baby bird. 30th May. All week the bees have been buzzing around the Sicilian Honey Garlic flowers. There are white tailed bumble bees, yellow and black striped bees and some with a dark brown thorax, black abdomen and very full yellow pollen pouches. Unfortunately they disappear into the bells of the flower and are too quick to photograph. 31st May. The gulls have been crying all night and the blackbird started to sing at 03.50 hrs. 1st June. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
