INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor writes: Pleased to hear a cuckoo at last, about 10.30hrs, 28th May from the Witham bank between Bardney and Bardney Lock. Also noted significant fledging of village starlings with the attendant fuss and chaos! Starling parents do work hard! On the village green first signs of fungus activity can be seen, great rings on the grass. I expect these will prove to be Boletus subtomentosus also known as B. lanatus, the Suede Bolete, which we get in our garden too. An early species here, these do seem associated with the local lime trees. https://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/application/files/7015/2455/1841/Xerocomus.pdf I am trying to put together an updated list of people or organisations that provide a Wildlife Rescue service for injured creatures. It would be very helpful to have recommendations from readers who "know the score"! Bob Sheppard says: "We have four barn owl chicks so far and the fifth is due on Wednesday afternoon." https://www.lenpicktrust.org.uk/owl-project You may notice that I have removed a few lesser-used links from the Bulletin. If you need to refer to them again they are in archived past Bulletins. http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html If you feel any ought to go back, please let me know. Suggestions for other useful links will always be welcome. Please continue to stay informed on about Co-19 and 'flu, adapting appropriately to future changes at indoor meetings and in the field. If you have any event postponements or changes please let us know. In adjacent grassland with a mowing regime to encourage diversity Common Spotted Orchids were over 50% a very pale form with unspotted leaves. This same grassland had more than 20 Red-tailed bumblebees visiting flowers and several Eristalsis sp. Hoverflies. A photo of one of the blue damselflies settled in the grass showed it to be a Coenagrion with the distinctive marks of C. puella just visible. On the pond the female of the Broad-bodied Chaser Dragonfly Libellula depressa, with brown body, was laying eggs on submerged vegetation and the blue male was chasing backwards and forwards. Surrounded by Woodland the Goldilocks Buttercup Ranunculus auricomus was at the edge if the grassland. Goldfinches were feeding on the seeds of the garden perennial cornflower. Photos from the Nature Trail were sent me which showed a rather worn Red Admiral, Small White Butterflies, a very dark Speckled Wood and a Green Hairstreak. The fungi Dryads Saddle was photographed on a tree where it emerged also in 2020 and 2022. A Hawthorn Bush completely covered in webbing with the leaves almost eaten away ( Ermine Moth?). From the window of a neighbour's garden excellent photos of Pale Tussock Moth photographed from both outside and inside so that on the former the underparts are shown. Last year on the Nature Trail there were numerous caterpillars of this species. Very colourful with red tuft at rear and white tufts across back (and stinging hairs). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks.
