INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor writes: Astronomical events near and far and hot weather ahead! The next perigee Supermoon will occur tonight - 13 July 2022. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/ James Webb: Nasa space telescope delivers spectacular pictures https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-62140044 UK heatwave: Temperatures set to peak on Monday https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62133171 UK heatwave: Temperatures to hit low 30s as heat-health alert issued https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62084934 Reminder : The Big Butterfly Count will begin on Friday 15th July 2022 and run until Sunday 7th August. Are you ready to take part? https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/ Bat note from Annette Falkner: Bats are tough little animals and can survive much longer than other small animals if they are injured, for example, which is to their advantage if they are found and taken into care, but can lead to a lingering death from infection or starvation if they aren't. What they can't survive so easily is dehydration, an issue at the moment. Bats drink on the wing, so if you have a bird bath do keep it topped up (the birds need it too), and if not a large flat dish, such as a plant pot saucer, placed high up and out of the way of cats, could serve the same purpose. There are a lot of young juveniles around at the moment, just learning the ways of their bat world, so a water source could be a life saver for them. I had this note from Ian Phipps: "I live in Tattershall Thorpe and up till now have not seen a single butterfly on our buddleia which is in full flower, I can't remember this happening before, or is it still early?" Anyone able to comment? Paul Scott was kind enough to send in details of a forthcoming lecture. Thursday 28th July, 7.30pm - Joseph Banks Society President's Lecture. BARTON Angela Buckle. 7th July. 2022 Humber bank Barton. Hedge Bindweed. [Roseata] GRIMSBY. TA265095 Joyce Attia 11th July 2022 20.30 hrs My first job in the morning is to put fresh water in the bird bath. The bees also need water in this hot weather, so I've put out a shallow saucer of water with some stones in the middle and put it in the shade. I haven't seen any bees go to it yet, but I'm told they will use it. I've had dozens of bees in the garden, they tend to go for the lavender and now the oregano is beginning to flower they like that too. They are mainly Bombus terrestris with one smaller bee that I can't identify, it's mainly black with a brown tail and a bright yellow collar. There have been a number of little hoverflies around, and those little black flies that are attracted to yellow flowers. There were some small green caterpillars on the roses, when I looked the next day they had gone, I think the birds may have got them. The starlings have discovered the bird feeder, there's a family of 6 so it needs topping up regularly. Apart from them I've only seen a few sparrows on the feeder this week. The regular woodpigeons have been as usual, but I haven't seen the collared doves for a few days. 9th July. Went for a walk along Humber Bank from Barton . There are a lot of blue flowers, cranesbill, vipers bugloss, a whole bank of buddleia bushes which attracted small tortoiseshells, dozens of large white butterflies, some ringlets and one small heath butterfly. Birds seen were robins and sparrows, we heard chiffchaffs and a blackcap's song was identified by the "Picture Bird" App. Our security light in the back garden attracts a lot of moths but unfortunately it's too bright to be able to look properly at them. HORKSTOW SE987279 Jenny Haynes 8 July 2022 Wrens are nesting in a bird box near my house. Frequent visits would indicate they're feeding young. I've not seen any bird use the box before so it's a welcome surprise. Another young toad spotted last night on the path. Birds in my garden include: Blue Tit, Great Tit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Blackbird, Dunnock, Greenfinch, Robin, Wood Pigeon, Magpie (having learnt how to use the bird feeders), Jackdaw (also attracted to feeders), and the ubiquitous Pheasant. I frequently see Buzzards overhead and a Kestrel over the verges. Tawny Owl calling last night. Butterflies include: Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Small White, Small Tortoiseshell, Ringlet. 10pm 9 July Distracted from watching TV tonight by a dragonfly flying around outside the window, hunting. Unable to identify which one but I was surprised to see it flying in the half light of dusk. 12 July 2022 Update on the wrens: two beaks can be seen at the nest box hole and adult bringing food. May only be one parent. I hope they fledge before the weather heats up again tomorrow! IMMINGHAM Angela Buckle. 6th July 2022 Immingham car park. Narrow- leaved ragwort. MESSINGHAM Angela Buckle. 5th July 2022 Messingham Nature reserve. WOOLSTHORPE BY COLSTERWORTH Jane Ostler 1-11th July 2022 Nature Trail (Meadow) SK91/24 On Sunday 26th June 2022 Marbled white Butterflies were reported 'lots of them''. On Monday 27/6/22 on a wet day 20 were counted low in grasses and they have been seen regularly to date. 5 and 6 Spot burnets were both flying on 6/7/22 Gardens in vicinity of my own at SK923247. 9/7/22 Moths coming to light included 5 species of Hawk Moth Privet, Pine, Poplar, Elephant and Small Elephant. There have also been lots of sightings of Humming Bird Hawk Moths this year. Peach Blossom and Ruby Tiger Moth , Hebrew Character, Buff Tip, and Spectacle were just some of the more readily identifiable species found. A photo of a caterpillar at the ready to pupate stage was the dramatically marked Alder Kitten. Comma and Small Tortoiseshell Butterflies are the most common in the garden with some Hedge Browns and Meadow Browns. Flying ants reported on10th July, emerging from walls of a conservatory. (No note of black or yellow). The heatwave means that there are at last more insects of all kinds about. I am compiling a list of those I recognise. In gardens hedgehogs are doing well with food and water put out for them. Young rabbits about on verges and dead ones being removed by buzzards. There have unusually been a number of dead hares on the road between South Witham and Woolsthorpe. Young ones out and about? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
