This time our visit is to the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Whisby Nature Park, Moor Lane, Thorpe-on-the Hill, LN6 9BW. Map Reference SK 911 661. This is a full-day visit from 10.30 am to 4 pm and so you will need to bring drinks and a packed lunch or you could decide to have lunch in the restaurant inside the main building. Do bring a pair of binoculars and any identification books that fit your interests. We meet outside the main visitor building before 10.30 am for a morning walk of about 2 miles around two sections of the reserve. Then, after lunch, starting at 2 pm we shall have a second walk of about one mile around a different section of the reserve. The terrain is not difficult on any of the walks and there are reasonable paths or tracks around all the reserve. Nevertheless, stout shoes, boots, or trainers are advised. Do bring waterproof clothing in case of rain showers. Heavy rain will cause cancellation of any walk or the whole visit if it happens before we start and it looks like spoiling the day. *** Seal and Birdwatching Cruises 2022 - South Lincs RSPB Group *** 14 cruises have been arranged for 2022, at various sailing times, starting ending on 22nd October. BOSTON GARDEN (TF326426) June 2022 Kathleen Pearson I was able to do the BTO Garden BirdWatch on all 30 days in June. There was an unusually large number of bird species for the month with 24 recorded, together with 8 butterflies. However the count for each bird species was quite low, with only two species reaching double figures - Starling 16 and Blue Tit 10. Quite unusual for a summer month was the occurrence of a Common Gull. Bird species:- Robin 2, Pied Wagtail 1, Blue Tit 10, House Sparrow 3, Collared Dove 2, Starling 16, Blackbird 4, Dunnock 3, Woodpigeon 6, Great Tit 6, Goldfinch 4, Wren 1, Carrion Crow 2, Black-headed Gull 5, Greenfinch 3, Song Thrush 1, Herring Gull 4, Long-tailed Tit 8, Lesser Black-backed Gull 2, Chaffinch 2, Sparrowhawk 1, Jackdaw 1, Common Gull 1 and Great Spotted Woodpecker 1. Butterflies:- Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Brimstone, Holly Blue, Large White. Orange-tip, Red Admiral and Ringlet. Extras:- Hummingbird Hawkmoth, Common Blue Damselflies and Blue-tailed Damselflies. BROUGHTON Angela Buckle, 28th June 2022. Broughton meadows. GRIMSBY TA265095 Joyce Attia. 5th July 2022. 23rd June Swifts, at least a dozen screaming over the street for at least 5minutes. Blackbacked gulls and herring gulls over river. A few swallows above the river. Male chaffinch on feeder. Lots of bees on campanula and lavender, also froghoppers on lavender. 25th June, 6 am collared dove waiting for me to change water in birdbath. I can't believe I've been trained by a pigeon. Adult great tit, house sparrows on feeder. Sparrows on buddleia. Lots of bumblebees on campanula and lavender, mostly Bombus Terrestris, small tortoiseshell butterfly, large white butterfly, lots of spiders, brown bodies and long legs, too fast to get a photo. 29th June. Solitary swan on the river, I'm sure he is the single cygnet from 2020, still alone. He really is the most beautiful bird, snow white, just sitting in the water preening himself. I hope he soon finds a partner. 14 juvenile mallards spotted. Seem to be a good mix of male and female. Last year they were mostly male. 30th June. One of my neighbours had a visit from a hummingbird hawk moth on her geraniums. 3rd July. Walk along the river A number of ringlet butterflies. Plants: ragwort, meadowsweet, butterfly bush, sweet flag, mugwort, red valerian, creeping thistle, bristly oxtongue, yarrow, purple loosestrife, sow thistle, lots of brambles in flower. There was a pretty silvery white moth on the lavender. Couldn't identify it. Very concerned about bird flu, I've been frequently cleaning feeders and birdbath. There are not as many birds visiting as previous years. We usually have goldfinches, greenfinches, tits, robins. I haven't seen a single greenfinch this year and only seen the odd goldfinch as it flies past. It's very worrying. HORKSTOW SE987179 Jenny Haynes 4 July 2022 I've seen a toad in my garden three times in the past week. I suspect it's the same toad as it didn't look fully grown. Last night I heard a Muntjac calling (?) in the fields behind my house. I've not seen or heard one here before. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
