INFORMATION, EVENTS, NEWS AND REQUESTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor writes: Drought and deluge are the main stories this week. Lincolnshire certainly had its share of rain! I hope readers have avoided flooding. Abbey Road's "lake" in Bardney is back again. Market Rasen: Houses flooded after heavy rain hits Lincolnshire https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-62570812 Flying Ant Days - BWARS - reminder - Our Help Needed.... Noted any flying ant events? Professor Elizabeth Liz Duncan says: "The study is current, and we would really appreciate any reports." https://www.bwars.com/content/flying-ant-days-we-need-your-data Annette Faulkner writes on Bats: "Thank you everybody who responded to my request for a check on their local bats - this looks encouraging. But did anyone go out and NOT see their usual bats? I should have made that a bit clearer I think. So if anyone did, if you could let me know that would be very useful information too. Certainly we have a bat or two over our garden, which is good." Last week I showed someone the grave of Bardney botanist ' Rev John Wray in Bardney churchyard. Joan Gibbons wrote in "The Flora of Lincolnshire": "Rev J. F. Wray, 1801-1859', son of the Vicar of Bardney, Botanist. His herbarium, chiefly of plants from Bardney 1820-1830, was found at Ipswich." See: John Wray (1776-1851): Vicar of Bardney, 1806-1851 by June Benton Downloadable pdf link on here: http://slha.org.uk/search/publications.php?id=53&zoom_highlightsub=John+Wray "Wray, son of a former Bardney schoolmaster, took the living of the village and proceeded to bankrupt himself by re-building the vicarage and extensively restoring the church. A fascinating account of his attempt to avoid penury and imprisonment." If you visit Bardney I'd be pleased to show you where Rev Wray is buried. Heavy bursts likely at times. Eastern areas may remain dry until late Sunday evening, western upslopes seeing the most of any persistent heavy rain. Winds generally light but becoming stronger with the arrival of rain, with a chance of coastal gales. Through this period, frontal systems likely to bring widespread rainfall. Rain across central and southern regions initially, could become more widespread to affect all parts for a time before becoming more settled. Fine and dry conditions prevail for many areas. With winds light and plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures can be expected for this period, generally rising, feeling humid at times. They drink on the wing, so if you have a bird bath do keep it topped up (the birds need it too), and if not a large flat dish, such as a plant pot saucer, placed high up and out of the way of cats, could serve the same purpose. There are a lot of young juveniles around at the moment, just learning the ways of their world, so a water source could be a life saver for them. If you find a grounded bat please don't try and release it. Put it in an escape proof box. Remember, a pipistrelle can get out of a hole the size of your thumb nail. Wear gloves or use a cloth to pick it up with. Phone us on 01775 766286. We’ll do the rest. GRIMSBY TA265095 Joyce Attia 16th August 2022 August 1st There are a lot of beautiful spiders both in the garden and finding their way into the house. I love spiders. The garden spiders are beautiful, and the one that ran across the carpet the other day was enormous. I have had to rescue a couple of bees from the webs over the last few days. August 3rd Great tit on feeder. Collared dove on birdbath Aug 4th. Can hear goldfinches but can't see them. Quite a few butterflies today, common blue, large white, gatekeeper, red admiral, also mint moths. Aug 5th. Woodpigeon on birdbath. Great tit on feeder. Single bat in the evening. Aug 7th. Sunday, birdbath disinfection day. Collared dove sitting on the fence, very impatient, waiting for me to clean it and fill it up. Then she's down for a drink and a bath. Aug 11th. Another really hot day. One adult swan and 2 cygnets on our part of the river. No sign of the others down here. Woodpigeon sitting in middle of birdbath for at least 10 mins. I wondered if there was something wrong with it, but then it got out and sat on the fence preening. The water was really warm. Aug 12th. Male and female blackbirds on fence waiting for meal worms. Aug 14th. 9 small swifts, I think they must be juveniles, quite high up, they were alternately fluttering and soaring. August 16th. Rain, blessed rain, battering against the windows ? HORKSTOW SE987179 Jenny Haynes 8 August 2022 A Red Legged Shield Bug landed on washing hanging out in my garden. Then it appeared again (no idea if was the same one) in my conservatory on 10 August where it frightened one of my cats by walking towards him! 10 August 2022 I saw a very small 'blue' butterfly flying near the hawthorn hedge outside my house. I saw it land with its wings closed and, after looking it up, think it was a Small Blue. Bats have been flying around the house each night at dusk. LANGTOFT TF118129 Annette Faulkner 15/8/22 A15 Dead fox at roadside, clearly collision with car. NETTLEHAM TF 01184 75301 11 August 2022 12:30 Su Colman I dug a small garden pond the winter before last and I am really pleased with how entertaining it is. I put native pond plants in which are naturalising nicely, the water-lily has flowered almost constantly this summer. We bought a little solar powered fountain for oxygenation and the sound of the water, and it has been a very effective addition. The pond has been adopted by a male common darter dragonfly, he patrols and perches on the tall plants at the margin. I have also seen a pair ovipositing into the pond. There are diving beetles and pond skaters and when I dip to the bottom, last year's dragonfly larvae are looking huge now. No frogs yet, but maybe they will arrive. They appeared to have had a good year by the numbers of young left in the sky after the adults left 0n 28/7/22. Swallow seen on the roof feeding a young one on 12/8/22. Its first brood had failed. A group of eight photographed on wires in Colsterworth on 13/8/22. House martins did not occupy two sites in Woolsthorpe this year but have been seen regularly in sky above our garden. 4/8/22 Buzzard watched feeding young in nest in large tree between houses and field. Same nest occupied by buzzards last year. Red Kites now coming regularly into some gardens. Fewer pheasants released this year. They have been a main source of food (as road casualties) in the past. Rabbits are now reappearing and are to some extent acting as a substitute. There have been in the last two years two coveys of English partridge in field margins alongside the Woolsthorpe Road. There are none this year. 7/8/22 Two Peregrine Falcons reported in a tree in the garden of a bungalow bordering the Nature Trail (From those nesting at St Wulfram's Church Grantham?) 8/8/22 Two long-tailed Tits, regular visitors to a bird table, brought with them 6 young and have been regulars ever since. Our Blue Tits nested, laid eggs but the chicks died before fledging. Two gardens reported successful nests of Goldfinches for the first time in four years. OTHER VERTEBRATES. Almost every garden pond, it seems has had Grass Snakes visiting. Here they have been the scourge of adult Frogs which have been resting up in the ponds in the day instead of in the shade of bushes. With the return of Rabbits there have been sightings of Stoats, including one moving its family across the Woolsthorpe Road. Several people have commented on the frequency in which they see Hares There have been two killed on the roads in the last two weeks - both soon cleared by Buzzards. Muntjak Deer droppings found at the side of a garden pond. On the lookout for Bats in our garden as recommended but none seen. In Colsterworth in a Colsterway garden five Bats seen regularly. In Woolsthorpe we feel like Hedgehog City. At least 8 households , including those with Hedgehog 'hotels' and Camera recordings, feeding moist food, supplying water. The championship must go to one garden where the five regular Hedgehogs were joined on 13/8/22 by a young one. INSECTS 8/8/22 Yellow Ants flying in front garden. Not so many this year since the driveway surfaced. All appearing to come from a thin line of brown vegetation between driveway and old stone wall. Brown Hawker Dragonflies seen not just at ponds but along hedgerows. At one pond Southern Hawkers (2), Common Darter and Broad Bodied Chaser. Many records of Humming Bird Hawk Moth where it has been interesting to find what they are feeding on in the drought. Elephant Hawk Moth Caterpillars created a lot of interest last year. The first photos have come in of them fully grown and displaying their 'eyes'. Of Butterflies in our garden the most notable 6 Red Admirals, Holly Blues flying throughout the period, but late in day. Large Whites which seem to increase in number every day, some in mating pairs. This year any precious 'greens', watered every night, are properly covered. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. NOTES ABOUT THESE WILDLIFE REPORTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting. However, records are sent in by a variety of reporters; from complete beginners to professionals. They may vary in reliability and occasionally may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. BULLETIN PUBLICITY POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. When sending in reports, e.g. unusual plants, please report any sensitive news directly to recorders. Not the Bulletin. We don't want to spoil things with untimely or unwise publicity. Thank you. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
