Information, hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Someone unkindly remarked this week, "We are only 7 weeks away from the longest day!" Looking at the weather and reading the May forecast, that's a sobering thought. I am delighted to hear that the Lincolnshire Environmental Awards are to be relaunched in a "post-Covid" format with a substantial prize! Groups that wish to enter will have to submit their entries by 31st July 2021. The finals will be a much simpler affair at Whisby Nature Park on the afternoon of Saturday 25th September 2021. For further information: https://www.lincstrust.org.uk/lincs-environmental-awards Weather Forecast: 9 - 18 May "Winds fresh to strong across much of the UK, potential for gales at first in the south and east, becoming confined to the northwest later. Temperatures nearer average, with a chance of warmer conditions in the SE. Further spells of rain, showers and fresh winds mainly for the north, with some hill snow in the far north through early next week. " https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/ When sending in reports, e.g. unusual nesting birds, it will be good if you can report any sensitive news directly to recorders rather than via the Bulletin please, as we don't want to spoil things with untimely/unwise publicity. If in doubt, choose caution. Thank you. https://lnu.org/specialists/ I am always amazed at how quickly readers open and look at their Bulletins. Within 24 hours 50% have looked at it. Over 70% had looked at it by the time I started work on this issue. MailChimp helpfully gives a ranking of the links to show how many are opened, allowing me to spot which topics are of most, or of least interest to you all. Your comments and suggestions do that too, so please feel welcome to let me know. Please refer to the relevant Covid-related websites below to check the latest information and pick up on any new advice you should know about. Things can change. Stay safe: Here is the week's selection of links from topical local to national and international news stories and articles sent in by fellow-readers. British Birds - about 100 past issues. First come first served. chris.r.dufeu@gmail.com *** Butterflies of Lincolnshire - brand new book available now *** This work brings together much previously unpublished data and information concerning the changing fortunes of the butterfly species found within this large county. Told through a series of diverse chapters covering the status of 64 species historically known to have occurred here, this is an entertaining and highly personal account of the county's lepidoptera, full of facts, anecdotes, conjecture and just a hint of controversy, including details of illicit releases and the seemingly conflicting ethics of the conservation organisations and certain maverick introductionists. The scope of this work will appeal to both amateurs and experts - it is unlikely that anyone reading this book will not find themselves enlightened, educated, and learning something new about these beautiful winged insects and their history in the second largest county of England. The following is an extract from the foreword by Peter Eeles, author of Life Cycles of British and Irish Butterflies and webmaster of the UK Butterflies website: "Lincolnshire is rather unique among our counties, and it has taken the endeavours of two stalwarts of the Lincolnshire butterflying community, Peter Cawdell and Pete Smith, to spell out the history of each of the butterfly species found, liberally sprinkled with their own personal experiences. The resulting and very readable work brings together a unique perspective of the county - one in which we are now fortunate to share." 235pp, softback, 224mm x 155mm, colour. Complete with graphs, habitat pictures, and 70 distribution maps showing changes in the range of many species over recent decades, along with their current status. Includes colour photographs of all species. Review: https://www.dispar.org/reference.php?id=175 Available direct from the author @ £21.95 + £4.00 p&p. Don’t forget, if you find a grounded bat, or one on an exterior wall, please don’t assume it’ll be OK and it will fly off. It won’t be and it won’t. Please take it in and give us a call on 01775 766286. Reminder: Bat rescue instructions If you find a grounded bat please don’t try and release it. Put it in an escape proof box - remember, a pipistrelle can get out of a hole the size of your thumb nail - wearing gloves or using a cloth to pick it up with, and phone us on 01775 766286. We’ll do the rest. *** Bumblebee sightings, please *** David Sheppard writes: Records of Bumblebees will be very welcome. Whilst it is often not possible to see any colour pattern on the buzzing silhouette, if you can get close enough to make a positive identification that would be great. The earliest Bumblebees are likely to be: Bombus lucorum (yellow & black banded with a white tail) Bombus terrestris (yellow & black banded with a buffish tail) Bombus pratorum (yellow & black banded with an orange tail - and usually conspicuously smaller than the others) Bombus lapidarius (black with a red tail) Bombus hypnorum (brown and black with a white tail) could be about as well. If you do manage to get close enough to see the colour pattern, have a look for any pollen on the back legs. The pollen is likely to be yellow and is easy to spot. If the bee is collecting pollen, she must have established a nest and is gathering pollen to feed her young. Please send your records to David Sheppard at d.a.sheppard@btinternet.com *** NFBR Conference 2021 *** Charlie Barnes has drawn our attention to this NFBR* conference: [*National Forum for Biological Recording"] "Outside the Honeypot: wildlife recording in the urban world" Thursday 6th May – Friday 7th May 2021 Originally planned for May 2020, this event has been postponed until May 2021, and will take place online. It would be helpful if readers would continue to report otter road kills and sightings to help build up relevant data. Carcases may be sent to: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/otter-project [Alas our local EA team no longer support the project by paying for transport.] Potential Bovine TB Hotspot Area [PHA] - Lincolnshire Wolds "If you find a dead badger or wild deer carcase within the PHA, please report this to the Animal and Plant Health Agency [APHA] via the Defra Rural Services Helpline 03000 200301. They will need the following details: 1. The location of the carcase to assess whether it falls within the PHA and in order to find it, if it’s suitable for collection. This could be an OS grid reference, longitude-latitude co-ordinates, the what3words address (tapping on the exact square where the carcase is located), a postcode or enough detail to precisely locate the carcase 2. Whenever possible an assessment of the condition of the carcase because decomposing or extensively damaged carcases are not suitable for post mortem examination." *** Find the Grid Reference - don't forget - it's important *** Grab a Grid Reference: https://www.bnhs.co.uk/focuson/grabagridref/html/index.htm UK Grid Reference Finder: http://www.gridreferencefinder.com/ Chris Manning writes: Please remember to use grid refs, If a recorder doesn't, it not only adds work but must invariably loose accuracy. DON'T FORGET - TIME FLIES! Please include the year in your reports in case they are copied and thus lose their context. Include the time too if relevant - e.g. for Bat records. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Thanks to our regular contributors across the county. Much appreciated. More Red Mason Bees have emerged from the bee hotel and some males on 1st May. Females of the Hairy- footed Flower Bee are everywhere on tubular flowers like comfrey but also on a Japanese Quince. A bee flying with them this week I believe to be the Mourning Bee Melecta albiformis but this needs confirming when I can capture a photo .Nomad bees were flying round gaps in a crumbling stone wall from which Orange-tailed Mining Bees were emerging. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in a few instances may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed please contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** Please copy and paste URLs if/as necessary.
