Information, hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes... *** If you have never been on a natural history walk around Boston Cemetery why not join in the next LNU Field Meeting there? The older areas are a fascinating place to explore, mature trees, wild flowers, fungi, insects and birds. The RSPB hold occasional bird walks there and they are excellent. http://www.onlyinlincolnshire.org.uk/sites/boston-victorian-cemetery/ Details of the meeting: Sunday 8th September 12.00 for 13.00 start. https://lnu.org/meetings/field-meetings/2019-09-08/ Did you watch BBC4's "The Secret Life of Landfill: A Rubbish History"? If you missed it you can still watch it on BBC i-Player. We enjoyed it a lot. There are some clips if you can't face the full 1 hour 29 minutes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bgpc2f Botanical colour question - a reader asks: I love scabious flowers but are they blue or lilac? I missed them when I lived in West Yorkshire, now I have them in my garden. I remember them from childhood as bluer, perhaps it depends on soil? Or genetics? Does anyone have thoughts on this? We want to encourage the UK to health-check the nation’s hedgerows in an attempt to safeguard the future of this important habitat. The survey will provide instant feedback about the condition of the hedge. You’ll receive separate scores for wildlife, connectivity and structure, and tailored management advice to guide surveyors to the best way of managing the hedge to ensure tip top condition for our wildlife in the future. As you know, woodland is the primary habitat for dormice, but they need a good network of hedgerows in order to travel to new sites. This helps maintain their genetic diversity, rescue declining dormouse populations, re-establish populations in woodlands where dormice have been lost and help them colonise new suitable habitat. If a hedgerow is good enough and with a wide enough range of plant species, hedgerows can even be a home to healthy dormouse populations. We are using #HealthyHedgerows across all of our social channels. Thank you in advance for your support. Please do get in touch if you have any questions. Walking the dog and actually saw a bat, thank goodness, at least there are still some around.. This is the first one I have seen for many months . From the "NOCTON area" Jerry Gunner writes Sunday, the hot day, I was taking my son to work in Newark. About a mile from Nocton towards the A15 we saw a lizard run across the road. I’ve never seen that in the UK. The next day gave us a flock of eight buzzards over a field in the Trent valley near Brant Broughton. Yesterday, Wednesday the 28th of August, 2019, I took the dogs for their walk along the road that runs parallel with the causeway to Bardney. Raptor central. No fewer than four buzzards, two walking in the stubble together. Two kestrels hunting together, no more that 30 yards apart. They even stooped together albeit on different targets. We’d already seen a female sparrowhawk but the best was yet to come. Really good views of a hobby! It was chasing dragonflies low down and then higher up in the tree canopy down towards Potterhanworth Booths. I’ve not seen many of those in the UK. We saw a female wheatear in Nocton this morning, 29th August. That was a surprise! ROAD KILLS? PLEASE LET US KNOW. Every drive is a transect! Reports welcome. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Thanks to our regular contributors across the county. Much appreciated. We rely on readers to send in their observations and we welcome records from everyone, experts or beginners. Please keep your reports coming. DON'T FORGET - TIME FLIES! My attention was drawn by a large raptor flying low over the garden hedge, towards my lounge window, chased by a Carrion Crow. It circled behind the house and returned landing in the stubble field a few feet from 4 Carrion Crows which took no notice of it. From about 50 yards I had excellent views through bins. Wheatear This last week whilst driving down the lane towards Car Dike 3 or 4 Wheatears have been disturbed from the verges showing their white rumps. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in a few cases may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. *** Codes of Conduct *** For good advice for ALL nature-watchers see the RSPB's birdwatchers' code https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/read-and-learn/watching-birds/code/ and BTO's pdf: https://www.bto.org/sites/default/files/u10/downloads/taking-part/health/bwc.pdf Code of Conduct for Responsible Collecting of Fungi for Research and Educational Purposes https://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/mycology/conservation/code-conduct BSBI Code of conduct for picking, collecting, photographing and enjoying wild plants. https://bsbi.org/wp-content/uploads/dlm_uploads/Code-of-Conduct-v5-final.pdf [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
