This is nearly twice as many dormice individuals as recorded last year! Unfortunately still no evidence of dormice recorded in Goslings Corner Wood LWT reserve, but we remain hopeful, and the boxes will continue to be monitored twice a year in line with the NDMP. All records are also submitted to the Greater Lincolnshire Nature Partnership. LDG currently has 49 members on the mailing list. During 2018/2019 season we had additional visitors, including visits from the Horncastle Guides and LWT Wildlife Watch Wragby group. In total there were 240 individual visits to Chambers Farm Woods by 110 different people, amounting to a whopping 1618 volunteer hours – this is an increase on last years hours by approximately 200 hours. This winter we managed to coppice two triangles, towards the south of Ivy Wood East. We also spent some time looking at areas that were coppiced last year, to check on the status of the coppice stools and success of the regrowth. Several stools that had been nibbled were covered over with more brash, but several of the stools have grown well. This will be a useful exercise to complete each winter to ensure we get successful regrowth. Where we had tried to lay stems to encourage additional growth in gaps, the stems have also started to regrow, and the ‘living stakes’ on the dead-hedges have also sprouted, so good things to continue doing during our winter work parties. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Thanks to our regular contributors across the county. Much appreciated. We rely on readers to send in their observations and we welcome records from everyone, experts or beginners. Please keep your reports coming. DON'T FORGET - TIME FLIES! Please include the year in your reports in case they are copied and thus lose their context. BOSTON (Garden by A16) 17/05/19 Roy and Kath Pearson Three corvids came into the garden today to feed on brown bread - Magpie, Jackdaw and a very unusual Rook, with a further Jay turning-up the following day. The 17th also produced a Song Thrush, which hasn’t been seen for several months. Fortunately this was sent from the garden by two resident Blackbirds as only seconds later a Sparrowhawk arrived. Many Swifts flying over the garden. TA265095 GRIMSBY. Joyce Attia 20th May 2019 11.10 hrs Along the river side. Quite a lot has been happening over the past few weeks. I saw a water vole close to the town centre- the first time in years that I have seen one in this area. He was happily munching on a reed. There are a number of little mallard families, 4 greylag geese with 9 goslings, a pair of swans with 8 cygnets, I haven't seen any moorhen chicks so far - the tiny ones had a bad time of it last year because it was so hot and the river weed was really thick, we had to call the RSPCA out to two littleday old chicks who were trapped in the weed for hours just slowly baking and we couldn't reach them. In the surrounding area there is a pair of thrushes, I don't think they were there last year, a number of collared doves, wood pigeons, blue tits and great tits, robins, chaffinches, sparrows, and grey squirrels. A couple of weeks ago - 9th May - it was dull and a bit drizzly. There were a large number of swallows feeding around the trees alongside the river. It was impossible to count them but there must have been 30 or 40, it just seemed as if they had all arrived at once. My neighbour has a couple of swallows nests but they were ignored last year, so we are hoping they are used this year. 12th May Saw 3 swifts flying at rooftop height. Heard them the day before, but couldn't see them. In my garden. I have been feeding the birds all year round. There has been a pair of blackbirds visiting regularly and I was rewarded the other day when they brought their family to visit, two beautiful fledglings, one is brown and the other has a speckly chest, is there a reason for that or is it just moulting? They don't seem to be afraid of me and they just ignored my German Shepherd. Other regular visitors have been a juvenile starling, 2 goldfinches, a wren, a pair of collared doves, a very tatty bluetit, one or two sparrows, and 2 robins who are picking the greenfly off the roses. There have been lots of 5 and 7 spot ladybirds this year. Over the past few days I've seen a couple of small blue butterflies, a mint moth, a large white butterfly, and lots of ants., SALTFLEETBY/THEDDLETHORPE NNR Richard Fox 15.05.2019 A walk from Rimac car park through the dunes to Churchill Lane and back along the 'coast' path Cuckoo male and female Marsh Harrier Sedge Warbler Green Hairstreak 25+ Green Veined White Orange Tip 3 Peacock 10+ Small Copper 6 Small Heath 10+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in a few cases may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. For good advice for ALL nature-watchers see the RSPB's birdwatchers' code https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/read-and-learn/watching-birds/code/ and BTO's pdf: https://www.bto.org/sites/default/files/u10/downloads/taking-part/health/bwc.pdf [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations.
