Please use the "forward to a friend" link at the end of every LNU Bulletin. Invite new readers to give it a try. We really need your help with this. ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers' hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes... *** Going through the Bulletin list I see some readers you have still not yet confirmed their consent to receive further emails. I have already started unsubscribing those who have not taken action. To remain on the list act fast, please: 1. Click on "update subscription preferences" link at the of the Bulletin. 2. Scroll down to "Marketing Permissions". 3. Tick Email box 4. Click "Update Profile" Thanks. I have had a couple of opportunities to help with lovelincsplants specimen collection at LNU Field Meetings and it is very exciting to see the project in action! Don't miss an opportunity to join in. Heads up for the Perseid Meteors, 17th July to 24th August, with the peak on 12th August. The Moon phase is favourable, so cloud permitting we should get to see a decent display. Have you any news for the Bulletin? I will be pleased to receive your reports and contributions and to give a "plug" for Lincolnshire natural history activity. The usefulness of the Bulletin entirely depends on what is sent in. If you can add to the interest, that will be great. As usual I have included a selection of topical links. Most were sent in by readers. Some I have chosen with the interests of particular readers in mind. This could be you, so don't forget to click. Keep watching the drama! Bob Sheppard writes: On 2nd July our two barn owl chicks were ringed. This will enable us to follow their journey should they ever be found in the future. We also caught the adult female. She had been ringed on 24th August 2016 as one of four chicks in a nest box on Billingborough Fen. So she has moved 12km in a SSW direction. This information demonstrates how useful is the data we receive from ringing birds. In the other tower built for the Len Pick Trust there were stock doves breeding in the bottom box. In the top box were three very healthy kestrel chicks. http://www.lenpicktrust.org.uk/owl-project/4593449091 *** National Cetacean Survey 4/5th August 2018 - Reminder *** Dave Miller is planning to run watches for this national cetacean survey along with Sea Watch Foundation on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August. One became settled over the country giving rise to long, settled spells of dry, sunny weather. A low ground temperature of 2.25? was recorded on the 24th. Total rainfall for the month of 7.2mm (0.28 inches) was measured as 1.6mm on the 7th & 5.6mm (a brief heavy spell of rain on the edge of a storm passing over to the north) on the 16th. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in a few cases may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. For good advice for ALL nature-watchers see the RSPB's birdwatchers' code https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/read-and-learn/watching-birds/code/ and BTO's pdf: https://www.bto.org/sites/default/files/u10/downloads/taking-part/health/bwc.pdf [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
