Readers' hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes... *** Heads up for the Perseids this weekend. Please let us know if you are successful. https://astronomynow.com/2018/08/03/dont-miss-2018s-favourable-perseid-meteor-shower-12-13-august/ SEDGE WARBLER (2014-2018) Roy Pearson Medically unable to do the amount of Ringing ‘out in the field’ as I used to do and am confined to a little in the garden. I recently received fascinating information on a Sedge Warbler that I ringed at a former site near WAINFLEET in 2014. This bird was ringed on 03/05/14 as an adult male, so must therefore have been at least a year old and survived the flight to and from Africa at least once. It was first re-caught in N. Norfolk by the group based at Holme two years later on 17/05/16. (They re-caught it a month later when it was breeding there.) It returned to the same place in Norfolk a year later in June 2017 and yet again in May 2018, which made it at least five years old and must therefore have survived the flight to and from Africa at least five times. Now waiting for information next year. Adam Parker writes: "The leaf-mining fly Liriomyza bryoniae new to Lincolnshire. On 14/7/18 I noted a leaf mine on the tomatoes growing in my garden in Barton-upon- Humber, complete with a puparium on the exterior of the mine. As I've been trying to record more leaf-mines this Summer, I initially ID'd the mine as Liriomyza sp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) and contacted Barry Warrington of the Agromyzidae Recording Scheme for advice. He recommended that I breed the pupa through, so it was placed in a plastic vial and duly emerged on 22/7/18. The adult fly was sent to Barry for determining and he identified it as Liriomyza bryoniae: new to Lincolnshire and only the third record held by the scheme for this species. Barry noted that the species is introduced and present in some commercial glasshouses in the country though 'wild' records such as mine were rare; now is a good time to go and check your tomato plants! For examples of the mine, larva, and puparium see: http://www.ukflymines.co.uk/Flies/Liriomyza_bryoniae.php and https://bladmineerders.nl/parasites/animalia/arthropoda/insecta/diptera/brachycera/agromyzidae/phytomyzinae/liriomyza/liriomyza-bryoniae/ Have you any news? I will be pleased to receive your reports and contributions and to give a "plug" for Lincolnshire natural history activity. The usefulness of the Bulletin depends on what is sent in. If you can add to the interest, that will be great. As usual I have included a selection of topical links. Most were sent in by readers. It's not too late to book a place! We are very lucky to have Neil Pike from Natural England to deliver another free plant identification session with you on the 14th August as part of our Young Botanists group (#LoveLincsPlants). The day will involve a morning classroom session where you will learn more about heathland ecology, its nature conservation value and some of the key indicator species. After lunch we will take a short trip to our Kirkby Moor heathland Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) near Woodhall Spa to take look at some of the key heathland plants in the field. Don’t worry if you have not attended a session before. These are aimed at beginners and you will be with people of your age group who are just starting out in the world of plant identification. Trees in Leaf Identification session 18th September: Just so you are aware, we will also be running a Trees in Leaf identification session on Tuesday 18th September at Whisby Nature Park in Lincoln. More details to follow shortly. If you are interested in attending this session please mention this in your heathland flora confirmation email. Confirm your booking: To book onto either of these training session please send an email with your mobile telephone number to the following email address: lovelincsplants@gmail.com. A further few days of dry, very hot weather followed until 0540hrs of the 27th when a storm with thunder and lightning gave 19.9mm of precipitation up to the time of observation (0830hrs) and a further 25.7mm during the next 24hrs.The dominance of high pressure during the month finally moved eastwards with the approaching low pressure systems from the west. The weather became very unsettled with thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and a noticeable fall in temperatures and humidity. During the third week of the month day- time temperatures had soared to 30.75? on the 24th. Minimum temperatures rose to an uncomfortable air minimum of 19.25? and ground 16.75? on the 27th. However the influence of low pressure and weather fronts was to be short lived. By the 30th another high pressure system was building up to the southeast of the UK pushing back the lows further west and this gave a more settled spell of weather with fewer showers and a gradual rise in temperatures. Winds were generally light to moderate during the month but the fresh north-westerly on the 28th did give a gust of 39.6mph. Total rainfall for the month 51.1mm (2.01 inches). Daily Notes and Wildlife Sightings: 010818 - Single kingfisher flew along the Eau near Black bridge at Paradise. 020818 - 2 humming bird hawk moths at Sea View. At least 300 hirundines feeding over meadows at Sea View, late evening, single peregrine on outer beach. 030818 - 5 whimbrel on the saltmarsh. 040818 - At Paradise lagoon were 3 common sandpipers, 1 ruff, 8 dunlin, 37 redshank, 1 snipe, 3 lapwing, 1 wood sandpiper and a greenshank flew high over the dune nearer to Sea View. 050818 - Juvenile cuckoo flying south over the dunes near Paradise and 64 redshank, 2 common sandpipers, 21 dunlin and 38 black-headed gulls on the lagoon. 060818 – A single red kite flew over Sea View midday and a short-eared owl was hunting over the edge of the saltmarsh near Paradise late evening. The hot sunny weather continued and there was a good show of butterflies in the Sea View area including 24 small tortoiseshells, 3 peacocks, 2 commas, 2 holly blues, 2 painted ladies, 2 holly blues, 4 common blues and a single speckled wood and white-letter hairstreak [assumed to be one of the two recorded before]. From the Rimac butterfly transect: 28 small skipper, 1 large whte, 13 small white, 10 green- veined white, 3 small copper, 4 brown argus, 33 common blue, 1 red admiral, 2 painted lady, 4 small tortoiseshell, 9 peacock, 4 speckled wood, 13 wall brown, 21 gatekeeper, 28 meadow brown, 5 small heath. Most days at least 6 kestrels have been hunting over the fields and dunes from Sea View to Crook Bank. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. BARDNEY LIMEWOODS NNR These cover a huge area, and records from them and records from volunteer recorders are one of the main inputs to management planning and the protection of rare/scarce and critical species. Reports always welcome. https://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/limewoods/get-involved/ Does anyone know a good website dealing with The Lincolnshire Limewoods NNR? Butterfly Conservation Lincolnshire Branch https://butterfly-conservation.org/300/lincolnshire-branch.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lincolnshire Dormouse Group Meetings The Lincolnshire Dormouse Group meet monthly at Chambers Farm Woods. We always welcome visitors and new members. Dormice are legally protected and sensitive to disturbance; attending the group's meetings provides the opportunity to see dormice legally with licenced surveyors. If you are interested please email lincsdormousegroup@gmail.com The Hazel Dormouse https://www.lincstrust.org.uk/cy/node/35 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The NNR includes the following sites: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chambers Farm Woods (comprises Ivy Wood, Little and Great Scrubbs Woods, Minting Wood, Hatton Wood, Hatton Plantation and Minting Park, and also three areas of grassland: Little Scrubbs Meadow (and extension), Small Meadow and Big Meadow. Since all have their own management plans, please give the actual location when reporting); College Wood, Cocklode & Great West Woods, Hardy Gang Wood, Newball Wood, Rand Wood, Scotgrove Wood, Southrey Wood and Wickenby Wood. Many of these include both areas of ancient woodland or important grassland, which are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and non-designated areas. Since managing the SSSI areas carries particular responsibilities to Natural England, records which provide a six-figure grid reference are of particular value to the Forestry Commission. Other woods included in the NNR but without public access: Stainfield Wood; Stainton & Fulnetby Woods (access by public bridle way only) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in a few cases may be difficult or impossible to verify. If further information is needed contact: old.museum@yahoo.co.uk Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. Interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly or thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. For good advice for ALL nature-watchers see the RSPB's birdwatchers' code https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/read-and-learn/watching-birds/code/ and BTO's pdf: https://www.bto.org/sites/default/files/u10/downloads/taking-part/health/bwc.pdf [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
