Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** From the Editor.... *** Many people worry that predation by domestic cats makes an impact on their garden bird populations. "Despite the large numbers of birds killed, there is no scientific evidence that predation by cats in gardens is having any impact on bird populations UK-wide." says an RSPB report. http://www.rspb.org.uk/makeahomeforwildlife/advice/gardening/unwantedvisitors/cats/birddeclines.aspx A stray grey cat turned up here a few months back. I spoke with some of the unsung heros who are working to deal with the 'unseen' problem of stray and feral cats in Lincolnshire. Some of these animals will have been deliberately abandoned. Others will have been born in the wild because the adults had not been neutered. Consequently an unknown number of these capable predators hunt and scavenge in order to survive. What is their impact on our wildife? http://www.mammal.org.uk/sites/default/files/Domestic%20Cat%20Predation%20on%20Wildlife.pdf http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/sites/default/files/rspb-predator-report_1.pdf The people I spoke with gave me some sense of the scale of the problem locally. Cats are rescued and cared for in the hundreds. It takes some time for a trap to become available. There is a recurring problem of people who borrow traps and 'forget' to take them back. It is a huge undertaking. It took only a week to get the job done once I had a trap. The grey cat was caught and neutered and is now at home in local farm buildings, living the traditional and purposeful life of a farm cat. She is still very nervous around humans, but she is adapting to her semi-domestic role. The lesson here is that this is a problem we humans do not have to accept. For more information on the issue, see: http://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/cats/straycats http://www.cats.org.uk/index.aspx [Reminder: If any link in the Bulletin does not work, please look at the URL. See if an extra http:// has crept in. If it has, delete the error in the URL and try it again. This problem seems to affect 'long URL addresses'.] Thank you for all your contributions. Charlie's note: This is one the Amara species of ground beetle (occasionally called sun worshippers/lovers - nice when that works out!). It's the subgenus Amara (as well) but not possible to get any further than that with a photo. There's a couple of common species that it could be, some requiring examination of the genitalia. They're called sun lovers because you often see the running over tarmac/stony ground in full sun. They are vegetarian- eating seeds mainly. Mark Telfer has a nice intro on his website: http://www.markgtelfer.co.uk/beetles/sunshiners-moonshiners-and-stem-climbers/ Asked if these were common, Charlie added: Yes - turn over any stone or sizeable piece of wood and they should be under it. Weather The weather at the beginning of April looked promising with typical sunshine and showers where daytime temperatures reached the mid-teens. A high of 16.25degC was recorded on the 2nd. However from the 5th - 15th the weather became very unsettled, influenced by continual waves of depressions from the west and southwest. This brought in strong winds from the east giving cold unpleasant days with squally showers. A long spell of rainfall on the 15th gave 24.2mm in 24hrs. By the 17th a major high pressure system had centred over the UK and became settled only to be replaced by low pressure systems towards the end of the month. The weather during that high pressure was influenced by very cold winds from the northwest - east sector. Daytime temperatures were below average hovering between 9.0degC and 12.0degC and night time frosts were frequent. A ground frost of -3.5degC (air -0.25degC) was recorded on the 20th and 30th (air -0.5degC). Bitterly cold squally showers, sometimes heavy with hail, were observed on the 24th, 26th and 27th. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in some cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold precise details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
