Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** From the Editor.... *** Thanks for the many interesting contributions this week. I started setting up this week's Bulletin last Friday, and caught a tribute to Ted Smith on BBC Radio 4's "Last Word", presenter, Matthew Bannister. If you would like to listen to it, it is on i-Player Radio along with Brian Sewell, Jackie Collins, PJ Kavanagh, and Yogi Berra. [You can skip the ones you don't want to hear.] http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06c4k44 The Lunar eclipse was impressive - a real Lincolnshire 'shining night'. See: In pictures: 'Supermoon' rising http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-34378782 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/video_and_audio/must_see/34377524 Would you be able to identify a Yellow-browed Warbler? There are a lot about. See: https://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdguide/name/y/yellowbrowedwarbler/ Someone is sure to ask about Donna Nook soon - but Lizzie Lemon reminds me that it will be another few weeks until the season is underway. Remember to follow guidelines, please, no dogs, stay in viewing area etc. See: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/nature-reserves/donna-nook/viewing-seals-donna-nook Apple days: Don't forget that Woolsthorpe Manor has an Apple Day on 11th October. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/woolsthorpe-manor/things-to-see-and-do/events/ I paid a visit to Gunby Hall this week, and noted they also have an Apple Day on Sunday 11th October, 11am - 5pm. See: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gunby-hall/things-to-see-and-do/events/ They also have a new exhibition of maps relating to the Battle of Loos, 25th September 1915, 100 years ago. [Loos was the battle where Rudyard Kipling's son, John, went missing.] The 'battle maps' were discovered in the Hall quite recently. If anyone has an interest in the Great War they are worth seeing. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gunby-hall/things-to-see-and-do/first-world-war/ If you know someone who might find the LNU Bulletin useful, please send them this link and suggest they sign up for it: http://www.lnu.org/wildnews.php Roger p.s. Don't forget: 12. ...and finally... links to local, national and international stories, most with an environmental/wildlife spin. Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes NNR Report 24th September - 1st October 2015 Contributors: Peter Roworth, Janet Roworth, Cliff Morrison, John Walker, Rob Scott, Nige Lound. The weather for September was quite changeable governed by distinct spells of high and low pressure systems. So, after a cool showery first few days, high pressure became established giving a mix of cloudy and sunny days where temperatures reached a maximum of 20.25°C on the 6th (note a near ground frost of 0.5°C). From the 11th - 17th a low pressure gave a spell of showery weather with some bright periods. Very light rain fell for most of the 14th giving 7.1mm ppt. High pressure moved in for the 18th - 20th before being replaced by another low for only the 21st and 22nd before a major high pressure became established for the remainder of the month. From the 23rd the weather became settled with several days clear and sunny but cool at night and distant fog in the early mornings. The maximum temperature for the month was 21.5°C on the 12th. Air minimum fell to 3.0°C on the 28th and a ground minimum of 0.5°C was recorded on the 6th, 26th and 28th. Total rainfall was 25.9mm (1.02"). Apart from a fresh NW5 on the 5th winds were generally light during the month. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in some cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Recorders at Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre [GNLP] , Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We sometimes withhold precise details of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. Please respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report on national networks. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
