Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor Writes *** Walking along the River Bain near Coningsby we saw a gathering of Housemartins in a feeding frenzy. A strong wind off Tattershall lakes and surrounding trees must have swept a host of insects toward the river. A splendid sight in the morning light. Because of seemingly endless problems e-mailing via Hutchison 3G, I am trying a mailing via a web-based server - MailChimp - recommended by Steve Gray. This may create a somewhat different layout while I get used to it. I will be interested to know whether you encounter problems with this new method of sending. Hopefully it will all go smoothly. Fingers crossed. Eventually I hope you will be able to update your own e-mail changes on-line. At the moment I restrict my data to e-mail addresses only to ensure my security is as tight as possible. To find out more, especially if you do a newsletter mailing yourself, see: http://mailchimp.com/ Roger *** Next LNU Event *** For LNU meetings see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Canada Geese were totally absent and only one Grey-lag recorded, whilst no waders were seen on the wet grassland and very few ducks. Meadow Pipits (5) are starting to return and several raptors were seen including three Buzzards and singles of Kestrel and Peregrine, the latter being very uncommon here. Foxes are seen increasingly nowadays and appear to be becoming much tamer, allowing a very close approach. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. Lincolnshire Coast NNRs including RSPB Wash Reserves See: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/species/birds/index.php http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/lwt/seals/index.php ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GIBRALTAR POINT NNR. http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/gib/index.php Katherine Bocock No report yet. SALTFLEETBY THEDDLETHORPE DUNES NNR. http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/nr/reserve.php?mapref=41 http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/conservation/designatedareas/nnr/1006128.aspx Week ending: 14th September 2012. John Walker, Roger Briggs, Steve Hall, Cliff Morrison, Peter & Janet Roworth A good variety of weather for the week with a daytime max. of 27.75°C on the 9th, the heavy spell of rainfall on the 12th gave 13.1mm and the first ground frost of the autumn was on the 13th with -0.75°C. Interesting observations from the low tide counts along the section of the NNR carried out by John W were Sandwich Tern 235, Black- headed Gull 2850, Arctic Skua 3, Dunlin 178, Ringed Plover 78 and Curlew Sandpiper 2. Other bird sightings of note on the NNR for the week have included Turtle Doves 2 imm near Brickyard on the 7th, a single Kingfisher flew along the R Eau outfall on the 9th, Wheatear 2 on the 10th, Whimbrel 3 south on the 11th. During the week there have been several passages of a few hundred hirundines actively feeding over the dunes but more so over the swathes of flowering sea aster on the saltmarsh. On the evening of the 10th a Nightjar flew out of a narrow shelterbelt near Sea View Farm and disappeared out of view over the dunes. The sight and sound of Pink-footed Geese flying over the NNR is a timely reminder that summer has gone and autumn is upon us. Numbers of birds have been small reaching 48 on the 13th but 80 were seen feeding in a stubble field near Theddlethorpe on the 11th. A charm of 78+ Goldfinch seen feeding on thistles, by Cliff, south of Crook Bank must have been a fine sight. SALTFLEETBY-THEDDLETHORPE DUNES NNR Week ending 21st September 2012. John Walker, Roger Briggs, Steve Hall, Cliff Morrison, Peter & Janet Roworth Interesting counts for the NNR section of WeBS carried out on the 15th included Bar-tailed Godwit 15, Curlew 33, Dunlin 45, Mallard 64, Oystercatcher 17, Red-throated Diver 3, Redshank 54, Ringed Plover 84, Sanderling 23, Wigeon 31, Sandwich Tern 37 and Gannet 23. High tide counts near Brickyard on the 19th and 20th included Pectoral Sandpiper 2, Ringed Plover 180, Dunlin 90, Little Stint 2 and Grey Plover 5, but a Peregrine Falcon caused a 'scattering effect' of birds as it flew the length of the shoreline at high tide on the 20th! Several skeins of Pink-footed Geese, c600, have been flying south during the week and a local skein of around 80 birds continues to feed off a wheat stubble field near Theddlethorpe. Small flocks of Meadow Pipits and Linnets are moving through, while Swallows and House Martins continue to be seen feeding over the saltmarsh. There have been few warbler sightings but 4 Goldcrests were reported at Churchill . The high tide over the saltmarsh on the 18th attracted over 700 Black-headed Gulls and 8 Little Egrets. Raptor sightings were singles of Marsh Harrier and Merlin. Small numbers of red admirals, speckled wood and small tortoise- shell butterflies remain on the wing and there are still many ruddy and common darters and a few migrant hawkers. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11. WORLABY Jenny Haynes There is a resubmitted planning application for a wind turbine (67 metres to blade tip) at Worlaby in North Lincolnshire, close to Worlaby Carrs, a site renowned for sightings of uncommon birds. As far as I can make out it is identical to the one submitted in 2010 which was withdrawn. At that time, thanks to readers of the Wildnews Bulletin, many objections were submitted by those of you who know the area. If you did object last time then please do so again. The application ref. is: PA/2012/1011 and can be found on North Lincolnshire Council's website: www.planning.northlincs.gov.uk *** 'Planetary emergency' due to Arctic melt... *** Is this the one to worry about? http://uk.news.yahoo.com/planetary-emergency-due-arctic-melt-experts-warn-025047710.html ---------- ~ THE END ~ ----------- (..until next week!)
