LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Note: Each address contains the relevant date. Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union or any associated organisations. Please make contact via the LNU Website: http://www.lnu.org/ or e-mail wildlifenews@lnu.org, or contact the Editor to join up and contribute articles or reports. [Or cancel!] E-mail: rparsons@enterprise.net ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor Writes *** By subscribing to the Wildnews Bulletin you have joined a unique network of naturalists who like to have weekly information about local natural history. The deeper purpose is to encourage readers to observe and record the wildlife of Lincolnshire and to develop their expertise. If you enjoy receiving the Bulletin but are not a regular contributor, why not send in something, a sighting; a question; or news of an interesting event? Only about 50 of 1000+ readers send in regular reports. The links at the bottom of the Bulletin have confused a few readers, who have pointed out some ambiguity in the wording. Thanks for passing on that information. I am adding the following note to help make the thin instructions of the MailChimp template a little bit clearer to everyone. Hopefully. "The links below allow you to unsubscribe, send a copy of the Bulletin to a friend or modify your profile/change your e-mail address. N.B. Each reader sees only their own address." Now you can update your e-mail address or mail a copy of the Bulletin to a friend, using these helpful hotlinks. Hopefully you will not unsubscribe, but you can if you need to. That removes you from the mailing list immediately. If anyone gets in a muddle, send me a note asking for help. We walked down to Cut End hide on Wednesday afternoon to try to catch the high tide. There was a lot about but a little too far off for our scope in the shimmer above the saltmarsh. Wonderful, nonetheless. Please keep those reports coming. We really need your contributions. Roger *** Next LNU Event *** For LNU meetings see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Sunday, October 21, 2012 Fungus Foray Rigsby Wood LWT Reserve. If you intend collecting fungi, please do your very best to follow the advice given on this website: http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/mycology/conservation/code-of-picking/ *** Spider Hunts *** Imogen Wilde writes: I have recently agreed to take on the roles of Regional Co- ordinator (RC) and Mentor for Lincolnshire for the British Arachnological Society (BAS). I will be organising a few field meetings to hunt for spiders and other arachnids in due course, but if any LNU members wish to get in touch in the meantime then please contact me on my e-mail address: Imogen@imogenwilde.co.uk *** Harlequin Ladybirds *** Jane Pennington writes: Unfortunately I don't know my harlequins from my 18-spots. I didn't realise ladybirds could be so complicated! Editor adds: This is a good time of year for trying to "spot" these! For help distinguishing and identifying Harlequins and other ladybirds, or submitting a Harlequin report, see: http://www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Ring Ouzels *** Jane Pennington writes: A black bird (blackbird sized-ish) with a white mark under the neck landed on the birdbath. It flew to the hedge but came back a few minutes later before disappearing completely. The only bird I can trace like this is the Ring ouzel. We didn't have chance to get a pic but I am positive this is what it was. On the RSPB website it indicates we are in part of its migratory area. See: http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/r/ringouzel/index.aspx *** Significant Disease Risk to Ash Trees? *** Julia Smith sent in the following link about ash trees and the threat of the tree disease Chalara fraxinea: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/chalara *** Gainsborough Area LWT *** Wed 17 October 2012: Hedgehogs – Janet Peto Janet will talk about how we can encourage hedgehogs into our gardens and what we can do if we find a sick or injured one, especially at this time of year. Indoor meetings are held at Morton Village Hall (just north of Gainsborough), and begin at 7.30 p.m.. A (minimum) donation of £1.00 includes refreshments, and there is usually a raffle, bird food available if pre-ordered (tel: 01427 613128) and other items for fundraising. People of all ages, Wildlife Trust members or not, are welcome. For more information, please ring Joy on 01427 628457 or E-mail Linda – L.Woodward@virgin.net ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. Sunflower seeds - Vicky Leighton writes: We have quite a few self-seeded sunflowers in our garden. Can anyone please advise how I harvest the seeds for the birds? Editor replies: What we have done is harvest the WHOLE flower head when the seeds look mature, drying these off in the greenhouse. We then hang them up well out of the reach of mice, and over the course of the winter put out the whole head for birds to help themselves, e.g. hanging from a branch or bird table. This works perfectly well. My one important tip is do not store the heads in plastic bags or containers as you will turn them mouldy - paper bags are best. You could pick out all the seeds and put them in a bird feeder - but WHY bother? Any other comments or suggestions? *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming. John Walker, Roger Briggs, Steve Hall, Cliff Morrison, Peter & Janet Roworth Bird migration seems to be incredibly slow so far this month with small numbers of Goldcrests, Redpolls, Long-tailed Tits, Greenfinches and Goldfinches moving south in the early part of the week. Similarly Song Thrushes have been present each morning in the bushes, Redwings were heard on evening of 5th, with a few seen on 6th, 3 Mistle Thrushes appeared on 8th increasing to 6 on 9th, and Blackbirds have been arriving, but again in very small numbers. A single Fieldfare occurred on the 9th. Jay numbers were not as high as in other parts of England with 13 over the dunes on the 8th, reaching around 50 birds by the 10th although accurate counts of total numbers were proving difficult. Single Common Buzzards were seen on the 6th and 9th, Merlin on the 6th and 10th, and a Hobby flying south over the dunes on the 8th. A Jack Snipe flew off the saltmarsh near Rimac on the 11th. Any sunny sheltered areas on the NNR still attracts common and ruddy darters and at least 20 migrant hawkers flew round a sunny glade near Brickyard on the 10th. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
