Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** It is tantalising to be so close to the 1000 reader mark. 30 new subscribers would do it, so do please mention the Bulletin to friends who might enjoy it. Tweak them now! There is a tremendous diversity of events here to tempt them. The LNU Riseholme Field Meeting/moth night sounds excellent. They could volunteer to do some Whale & Dolphin watching or study dormice at Chambers Wood! They could go to David Lindo's talk in Boston or book a place on a boat trip in The Wash. The regular walks and talks of the LWT and Heritage Open Days 2011 round it off nicely. Please keep your reports coming, as they are important scientific data and of interest to everyone who reads the Bulletin. Thanks to all stalwarts who keep them coming. By the way, my poetic nature responded well to the pager report of a Wryneck at Rimac! Saturday, September 24, 2011 Riseholme College, N of Lincoln, off A15 12.00 for 13.00 start. Meet in car park next to Conference Hall at SK981 756 Evening moth/bat session starting at 7pm. Includes an opportunity to investigate the LNU Collection and encourage students to use them. Habitats: Parkland, woodland, lake. Leaders: Brian Hedley 07989 665794 brian_hedley@hotmail.com (afternoon) and Colin Smith (evening) 07595 414318 *** Cetacean-watching - help welcome *** Dave Miller writes: National Whale & Dolphin Watch weekend ran last weekend with dedicated watches taking place at Anderby Creek, Winthorpe Tower, with kind permission from the Coast Watch Institute, and at Gibraltar Point. Finally 6 – 8 harbour porpoises were spotted on Sunday afternoon from Winthorpe Tower. This project is run by Lincs Wildlife Trust and SeaWatch Foundation. I am recruiting volunteers to do effort-based watches along the Lincs coast to get information on movements and patterns along our coast. Volunteers can spend as much or as little time as they like, it all helps building a picture. If you are interested please contact Dave Miller, Coastal Ranger, on 07919 326646 or dmiller@lincstrust.co.uk *** Kirkby Moor - apologies/help needed *** Dave Bromwich writes: I am sorry to report that the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust are going to start locking the top gate "out of hours" at Kirkby Moor following police advice. A pedestrian gate will be fitted, so for the early starters or dusk visitors, parking will have to be on the roadside. A lay-by is only just down the road from the entrance gate. For most of the daylight hours the track will be usable as per usual. We have been plagued by increasing amounts of littering in the car park: cans, bottles, fast food packaging, faeces, condoms etc. over the last 18 months, but recently it would appear drug taking is becoming more common and the behaviour more unpredictable. The bird hide screens took a bit of a battering the other evening and the track across the heath has become a rally track. Even the sheep hurdles have been stolen. The top gate may have to be locked at any time if the problem persists, but we will do our best to keep the gate open and we will keep reviewing the situation. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. If anybody sees suspicious behaviour around any of the Kirkby nature reserves could you let me know? All information treated with the strictest confidence. The main culprits seem to be in a black BMW 3 series which looks much too flash for the occupants, a burgundy Renault, possibly a Megane and a silver (?) hot hatch with a very loud exhaust. The occupants do not readily appear to have an interest in nature conservation! Please do not approach these people or put yourselves at risk by being seen gathering information, such as number plates. Dave Bromwich Head of Nature Reserves Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust dbromwich@lincstrust.co.uk 01507 526667 Editor adds: We often hear moans about visitors and litter, dog mess etc. but the reality is that a well-used reserve offers a reduced opportunity for antisocial behaviour of all kinds. If a site is being misused, every visit we make can reduce problems. Already it seems that the "little gem" of Hagnaby Fen is getting over its recent bout of nonsense. *** Gainsborough Group LWT *** Linda Woodward writes: Wednesday 28th September 2011 7.30pm Otters, water voles and other wildlife (from an Internal Drainage Board perspective) Chris Manning Morton Village Hall (just north of Gainsborough) Raffle and other fundraising items on sale A (minimum) donation of £1.00 includes refreshments People of all ages, Wildlife Trust members or not, are welcome. *** Grantham Branch of the LWT *** Marion Ellis sent in the following event details: All at Barkston & Syston Village Hall on A607 east of Grantham at 7.30pm Members free, visitors suggested donation £2, raffle, refreshments, Trust sales stall Friday 16 Sept. Nine years on from the release, this confirms that the dormice are now well established in central Lincolnshire, and as previous years have shown, continuing to spread. This was particularly useful since the trainees were due to be assessed, and this is always easier if they can handle lots of mice! As a result, three of the current trainees will be recommended for Natural England licences, and three more have been told that they are very close to achieving this. This being holiday time not all the trainees were able to be present, but assessments will continue at the remaining sessions this year. It is particularly important to have more licensed handlers since we need to extend the monitoring to more woods, and also prepare for, hopefully, the next release in 2012. There will be a change to the advertised date next month, when the session will take place on Sunday 18th September, NOT Saturday. We meet at 09.30 at Chambers Wood Centre and, as ever, anyone interested is welcome to attend. Sadly we can't guarantee another session like the last one, but autumn is typically the time when the young of the year start moving out and exploring their surroundings, so we never know where they will turn up! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
