Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** We reached 990 readers this week. Hopefully we shall shortly make the 1000. Please help us get there by mentioning the Bulletin to others. The parched autumn made the LNU Fungus Foray a lean affair this year, but an autumn walk in the woods is not an unpleasant activity. 30+ species were found and sightings of buzzards and deer added to the day's interest. Ray Halstead tell me this is very much the norm for fungus hunts just now. Hopefully our bit rain will bring along a late flush. Ray will welcome records. Went to Donna Nook 9am Wednesday 26th. Fantastic morning. An estimated 60 adult seals up and 3 pups to be seen. Then went down to Moggs Eye to give the dogs a run and saw a pale Marsh Harrier being mobbed by Carrion Crows. Obtained total perfection with 2 bacon rolls and a cuppa. Don't forget to put your clocks back this weekend. Thinking about the annual problem of Christmas presents, here are some possibilities that provide usefulness or pleasure, often both: Bat Detector: See http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/bat_detectors.html Trail Camera: See: http://www.flyonthewall.uk.com/ Bird Pager. Unless otherwise stated, Indoor Meetings are held on Saturdays at the Whisby Education Centre, Whisby Nature Park, Moor Lane, Thorpe on the Hill, Lincoln and start at 2pm. Saturday, November 26, 2011 Lincolnshire Peregrines Andrew Chick, Chairman of the Lincolnshire Bird Club will speak on these fascinating birds. Editor adds: great subject, great speaker - don't miss it! *** Fungus links *** Ken Rowland's fungus page on the LWT website: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/species/fungi/index.php Wild About Britain http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fungi Fungi World http://www.fungiworld.co.uk/ BMS Edible and Poisonous Fungi - important to read http://www.nifg.org.uk/edible_fungi.htm CABI/BMS Database and checklist http://www.fieldmycology.net/ British Fungi - keys http://www.fieldmycology.net/GBCHKLST/key.asp?KeyID=8 British Mycological Society http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/ Mushroom Pickers' Code http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/mycology/conservation/code-of-picking/ *** Seal Season Approaches *** Readers of the Bulletin are urged to respect and support the advice and policy of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust in relation to access to seal breeding areas: to stay behind the fence in the viewing area and not to venture out onto the beach. By respecting Trust guidelines you reinforce their work to protect seals during the pupping season and ensure the safety of the visitors. Your good example throws into sharp relief the arrogance of those who choose to act otherwise and it might just shame them into more compliant behaviour. Maybe. See the Trust webpage: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/lwt/seals/index.php We hope as usual to report updates once the seal season begins. Please remember to avoid the weekend visits if you can, as visitor numbers can be high. "Val" writes: I visited Donna Nook on Saturday 22nd October, The first pup of the year had been born on the Friday afternoon. Mum and baby looked good, one other cow on the beach but she had not given birth then. Both being watched by 5 bulls. Daniel Preston writes on 24th: I visited Donna Nook today from around 12 until 3 o'clock. Around 25 adult seals had moved up to the dunes and 2 Pups had been born today. I must say, the car park was absolutely full. A burger van had also moved in (a good thing for long observation sessions). If you are intending to see the seals, I would advise going next week when the kids are back at school and definitely avoid the weekends. Also please comply with the wardens instructions on-site and never attempt to approach the seals. *** Gainsborough LWT Area Group *** Dave Stockley writes: Wed 16 November 2011: Derbyshire Wildlife Speaker Paul Hobson - an internationally recognised wildlife photographer, winning numerous awards. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
