Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** Heads up for the Orionid meteor shower, 15th to 29th October, with a peak on 21st/22nd. Usually quite good, Moon and cloud permitting. The slight hold up this week was due to Hutchison 3G "Denial of service". I had complained at the number of e-mail failures in recent weeks and they took this to suggest I am a phisher and blocked our 3 account. Considering what I would do to a real phisher if I caught one, this is a tad ironic. They now know that the Wildnews Bulletin is not Spam and we are up and running again. I will be acknowledging all incoming reports and putting them in next week's Bulletin. Roger. *** Next LNU Event - updated *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Morton Village Hall (just north of Gainsborough) Raffle and other fundraising items on sale A (minimum) donation of £1.00 includes refreshments People of all ages, Wildlife Trust members or not, are welcome. *** Noxious Weed? *** John Cowell asks: You mention that there are only two plants flowering on the Theddlethorpe/Saltfleet Dunes, well there is still plenty of the notifiable weed Ragwort in flower, why is this not being eliminated? Peter Roworth replies: We do not wish to eliminate common ragwort. As a late summering plant it is a good nectar source for a wide range of insects and is a classic pioneer plant along with rosebay willowherb and thistle sp and bramble where disturbed ground on sand dunes has allowed these sp to colonise. In time, there will be a change in plant communities leading to a mix of dune grasses and the finer plant sp. Occasionally some areas of the former sp will be managed through mowing and herbicide application, particularly in the grazing compartments or on the landward side of the dunes. *** Seal Season Approaches *** Readers of the Bulletin are urged to respect and support the advice and policy of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust in relation to access to seal breeding areas - to stay behind the fence in the viewing area and not to venture out onto the beach. By respecting Trust guidelines you reinforce their work to protect seals during the pupping season and ensure the safety of the visitors. Your good example throws into sharp relief the arrogance of those who choose to act otherwise and it might just shame them into more compliant behaviour. Maybe. See the Trust webpage: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/lwt/seals/index.php We hope as usual to report updates once the seal season begins. Please remember to avoid the weekend visits, as visitor numbers can be high. *** Lincoln Photo & Optics Show *** Dean Eades writes: When: 03/11/2011 Where: The Lawn, Union Rd, Lincoln It's back, bigger and better than last year. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
