LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Note: Each address contains the relevant date. Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the Lincolnshire Naturalists Union or any associated organisations. [Or cancel!] E-mail: rparsons@enterprise.net ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** Heads up for the Orionid meteor shower, 15th to 29th October, with a peak on 21st/22nd. Usually quite good, Moon and cloud permitting. With readership at 980, a mere 20 people would get us up to the elusive 1000 mark - which would be very pleasing. If you know anyone who might enjoy receiving the Bulletin please give us a plug. And keep your reports coming in. See the following article from Chris Manning if you have any doubts as to the value of our efforts, most notably the LNU Recorders, who pull it all together. Roger *** Natural Environment Research Council Report on Taxonomy *** Chris J Manning writes: This report was commissioned in response to concerns previously expressed by the House of Lord’s Science & Technology Committee. Perhaps the most interesting comment for Bulletin readers is the section on “Developing a National Strategy in Taxonomy & Systematics” with one section worth quoting “Taxonomy and associated areas of biodiversity science are one of the few areas of modern science where “citizen scientists” can make genuinely valuable and novel contributions. Indeed, considering the diversity and number of species involved their role is critical in advancing the subject”. This report is worth reading, it demonstrates the important role of amateur naturalists and will hopefully influence government policy and funding provision in the future http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/programmes/taxonomy/events/pubreview.asp *** Hare Coursing *** Would everyone keep an eye out for illegal hare coursing? Lincolnshire Police's Nick Willey writes: The Police Hare coursing operation is OPERATION GALILEO. It commenced on 1st October and will run over the hare coursing season. If you have any information regarding illegal Hare coursing then please contact the Police on 0300 111 0300. Editor adds: If you have not yet joined Farm and Country Business Watch perhaps it is time you did? The scheme needs our support. http://www.lincs.police.uk/News-Centre/Campaigns/Farm-And-Country-Business-Watch/ http://www.humberside.police.uk/country-watch/farm-and-country-business-watch/north-lincolnshire-country-watch http://www.nelincs.gov.uk/safercommunities/crime-reduction/farm-watch/ *** Next LNU Event - updated *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Volunteers can spend as much or as little time as they like, it all helps building a picture. If you are interested please contact Dave Miller, Coastal Ranger, on 07919 326646 or dmiller@lincstrust.co.uk *** RSPB Help Needed *** John Badley writes: The RSPB would like to hear from any Lincolnshire birders interested in taking part in the Volunteer & Farmer Alliance (V&FA) during 2012. This project has been very successful in helping foster a positive working relationship with farmers in the county and the surveys have identified important populations of some of our scarcer and most rapidly declining farmland species, such as turtle doves and corn buntings. The survey results have enabled the provision of targeted conservation management advice and encouraged and enabled farmers to enter their land into both tiers of the government's Environmental Stewardship Schemes, which are designed to help farmland bird populations. As well as contributing towards farmland bird conservation V&FA is also a great opportunity to get out onto private farmland in your area and see something different. The surveys require a flexible commitment of three to four early morning visits of about four hours between April and July. It is a very popular scheme with farmers and we have vacancies throughout Lincolnshire, if you are interested in being involved please contact Emily Field emily.field@rspb.org.uk. Further details of V&FA at www.rspb.org.uk/farming *** Harlequin Ladybirds *** Please keep looking for and reporting Harlequin ladybirds. http://www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Autumn's Migrant Moths *** Butterfly Conservvation is reporting unexpected numbers of migrant moths this Autumn. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. RISEHOLME COLLEGE, LNCOLN SK981 756 24 September 2011 LNU Meeting led by Brian Hedley and Colin Smith and attended by 14 people during course of afternoon and evening (moth and bat session). Despite the warm and dry evening moths were fairly scarce with only about 15 species noted including copper underwing, sallow and common marbled carpet. Three bat species were recorded feeding in the lake area (Common Pipistrelle, Soprano Pipistrelle and Daubenton's) with Sopranos very numerous (10+). The church there obviously held a bat roost due to the frequent droppings present. Other mammals noted included two hedgehogs, a weasel and a common shrew. A young common frog was also found. Botanically, there was a mix of native and ornamental species with about 200 species noted including small-flowered balsam, thorn apple, mare's-tail and wall lettuce. Unfortunately the northern part of the lake had abundant New Zealand pygmyweed present. A Judas tree in the car park was interesting. Invertebrates included three butterfly species with very good numbers of commas noted on water mint around the lake edge. Two southern hawker, ten migrant hawkers and at least five common darters were present. Both green and red-legged (forest bug) shieldbugs were found near the lake. Bumblebees (mainly red-tailed, buff-tailed and common carder) were frequent on a large stand of Verbena near the car park. Some huge swan mussels were noted in the lake. About 40 bird species were recorded including a very noisy kingfisher, a siskin, two buzzards, tawny owl and at least five chiffchaffs and treecreepers. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
