Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** By late October the Indian Summer should be over and hopefully the autumn fungus season will be here. The LNU Fungus Foray is an event you should not miss if you have an interest in these fascinating organisms. I have included some helpful mycology links. We hope to see you there or at other local fungus-hunts. You may also like to note that Professor Mark Seaward is to give an illustrated lecture in January. Those of you who missed the opportunity to hear his talk to the Joseph Banks Society should get to this if you can. It will be interesting to have reports and observations relating to the recent unseasonal autumn weather. Thanks. Roger p.s. We are off to Stamford Apple day today [Saturday] where you can find help in identifying varieties. The old Stamford varieties are being researched and conserved by the Stamford Community Orchard Group, a winner in this year's Lincolnshire Environmental Awards. If so, read on! I've set up a Flickr group to showcase these photos http://www.flickr.com/groups/1779070@N22/ Photos added to this group on Flickr will be added to the county dataset of beetles. Ideally all photos need a location, date and the name of person who took the photo - an identification would be helpful, but this can be provided if not known! *** Cetacean-watching - help welcome *** Dave Miller writes: I am recruiting volunteers to do effort-based watches along the Lincs coast to get information on movements and patterns along our coast. Volunteers can spend as much or as little time as they like, it all helps building a picture. If you are interested please contact Dave Miller, Coastal Ranger, on 07919 326646 or dmiller@lincstrust.co.uk *** Wash Trips *** Steve Keightley writes: There are still a few places left on the trip arranged for Sunday 9th Oct 2011. Depart Sluice Bridge, Boston at 0700. Full facilities on board. £30 per person. Please contact Steve Keightley for further details. 01205 290233 or 07887 656761. Some photos on Steve's website http://www.yellowbellybirdphotography.co.uk *** RSPB Help Needed *** John Badley writes: The RSPB would like to hear from any Lincolnshire birders interested in taking part in the Volunteer & Farmer Alliance (V&FA) during 2012. This project has been very successful in helping foster a positive working relationship with farmers in the county and the surveys have identified important populations of some of our scarcer and most rapidly declining farmland species, such as turtle doves and corn buntings. The survey results have enabled the provision of targeted conservation management advice and encouraged and enabled farmers to enter their land into both tiers of the government's Environmental Stewardship Schemes, which are designed to help farmland bird populations. As well as contributing towards farmland bird conservation V&FA is also a great opportunity to get out onto private farmland in your area and see something different. The surveys require a flexible commitment of three to four early morning visits of about four hours between April and July. It is a very popular scheme with farmers and we have vacancies throughout Lincolnshire, if you are interested in being involved please contact Emily Field emily.field@rspb.org.uk. Further details of V&FA at www.rspb.org.uk/farming *** Harlequin Ladybirds *** Please keep looking for and reporting Harlequin ladybirds. http://www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Wallcreepers *** Roy Pearson writes: I don't know if this is of any interest to Bulletin readers, but we are back from Switzerland having seen the elusive WALLCREEPER at a very accessible site on the regular tourist trail at Meiringen - and not the one that is given in the guides where we haven't had any success. If any readers would like details I can supply them. [Please contact editor if you would.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. RAITHBY-CUM-MALTBY, near LOUTH TF 309 847 Silvia Fowler 14-27.09.11 Pseudoscorpions I recently noticed some tiny invertebrates between the removable boards of my compost bin. They looked like miniature scorpions with a body length of only 1.5 mm and a pair of large, segmented pincers of about the same length, but no tail. Intrigued, I took some photos and contacted Roger Parsons, who put me in touch with Annette Binding, the LNU Recorder for Spiders, Pseudoscorpions and Shieldbugs. This is her response: "They are Lamprochernes nodosus. This species is widespread in Britain and occurs in compost and dung heaps. There are only eleven previous records of Lamprochernes nodosus in Lincolnshire from eight locations. It was last recorded in Lincolnshire in 2007 at Grantham. There are three previous records for the Louth area, all pre-1906. I only receive a few records of Pseudoscorpions each year, partly because they are very small and are therefore easily overlooked so I am very grateful for your records." Not rare, but rarely recorded – go and find your own! They're fascinating! *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Thanks. FENTON SK844 772 Richard Fox 28th September 2011 As I am restricted to house and garden for a while due to recent surgery I have been able to concentrate on inhabitants taking advantage (like myself) of the Indian Summer! The starlings have been frequent visitors to the garden over the past few weeks but this is the first time I have seen the white starling. I did manage to get a picture of it, although slightly out of focus. Butterflies: Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Red Admiral, Brimstone RAITHBY-CUM-MALTBY, near LOUTH TF 309 847 Silvia Fowler July to mid September 2011. Our House Martins had a very poor season this year. After 2 nests were taken over by sparrows, we ended up with only 7 active nests compared with 10 in 2010. They all managed to raise one brood, but some chicks were lost to overnight attacks by (I presume) tawny owls (resident nearby and observed close to nest sites last year). 2 pairs didn't even attempt a second brood (maybe adults got killed?). The others suffered systematic attacks, one by one having their nests ripped open and chicks taken once they could be heard twittering inside. The remaining birds didn't repair their nests and stopped using them for roosting. Although we saw them hunting over the adjoining meadow, they didn't use the electricity wires to rest for preening like they used to. No house martins were seen after the gales from 12-14 September. When last year around 80-100 birds left for Africa, there could have been barely half that number this year. I hope this is a one-off incident on this scale, otherwise we might need to look closer to home for reasons for their decline. It looks like a French ringed bird...may have more information later. Other birds of interest have been nice sightings out to sea of Red-throated Divers, Gannets and a single Arctic Skua. A Short-eared Owl was observed hunting over the edge of salt marsh and dunes. One highly unusual record, for its location, was a single Forest Shield Bug that had alighted on to a telescope whilst the observers were ending an evening wader watch...at least 1 km from Rimac. In September we found at least 30 dormice in the boxes, including 5 litters, all of them born since August and four of the litters less than a week old. So the mice are clearly thriving, and a 'nut hunt' carried out following the box check confirmed that they have spread further in the last year. They are now well on the way to reaching Little Scrubbs meadow, if they haven't already passed it on their way north! There will be one more box check, in October, after which the work swings over to management. We have a further coupe to coppice this winter, and last winter's work, which suffered from a slow start and then a full stop due to the December snow, to complete. So all help warmly welcome! A list of working days will be posted here as soon as it is ready. Come early next spring, the plan is (with kind permission from all the landowners involved) to put tubes into the hedges between Little Scrubbs and Goslings wood and between Minting Park and Austacre wood, for checking through next summer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
