Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. Rodge Brownlow comments: Several years ago we dug a pond in our garden in front of the kitchen window, now as I wash the dishes three times a day I am treated to see more birds than usual use it in this dry time, our more uncommon ones are linnet, yellow hammer, yellow wagtail, pied wagtail, goldfinch, greenfinch Our swallows were a little late in returning and then didn't set about nest building as normal, I put this down to lack of mud and from a cattle trough in the field skelled out some water and topped it up on a daily basis, swallows are now nest building. Rodge Brownlow David Clarke on Litter Picking I have yet again had a couple of hours litter picking at Colsterworth Bank a LWT. RNR. for which I am voluntary warden. I go past the reserve on the bus both to and from work every day and after a litter pick I look out of the window with dismay as day by day it builds up again. 90% of the litter is fast food packaging from well known vendors and aluminium drink cans. I have a fanciful notion that these companies should have a tax levied on them and that passed on to pay for the litter to cleared on a regular basis by the local authority, thus helping to protect these vulnerable sites. This cost of this tax would of course be passed on to the consumers who throw the stuff out of their car windows. Am I making any sense? Maybe. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. We didn't notice them going to and fro and the first we knew about it was when Kath decided to move the bin down the garden and took off the top to empty it. They took exception to this and Kath exited the area at high speed and took refuge in the conservatory. They don't seem to mind our moving about the garden so it seems we can live in mutual harmony, minus compost however. Thanks are due to Roger for identifying the species for us. Editor adds: Postscript - by coincidence a colleague brought me a photo of tree bumblebee in a next box and I sent this to Roy who confirms these are the beasts in his compost bin. Most bumblebees coexist with humans without problems. If necessary, it is possible to move bumblebee colonies successfully, or even to re-route the entrance of under- ground nests with a bit of pipe. In theory, anyway. Tree Bumblebees ARE aggressive and have a penchant for bird boxes or similar. They are a newish species in the UK. See: http://www.bumblebeeconservation.org.uk/ in particular: http://www.bumblebeeconservation.org.uk/tree_bee.htm and for identifying other species, see: http://www.bumblebeeconservation.org.uk/bumblebees_id.htm COLSTERWORTH BANK. Grid Ref. TF 025066 Daily since 6th. May at various times. The catch was 18:1 in favour of Reed Warblers. A similar evening catch on 22/05/2010 was only 12:5 in favour of Reed Warblers, with the same amount of netting used.. This is too small a sample on which to draw conclusions, but I wonder if anyone is recording lower than usual numbers of Sedge Warblers this year. WILDMORE FEN TF216534 unless otherwise stated. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11. Roger Morris describes the course as follows:- An Introduction to Hoverfly Identification This course is designed to give the novice sufficient confidence to tackle these attractive and interesting flies. By the end of the second day most pupils can be expected to understand the critical parts of the keys that often cause trouble. The programme comprises a mixture of formal and informal sessions.
