Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** Friends and colleagues of Mark Crick may be interested to read his obituary in the Rutland & Stamford Mercury. http://www.stamfordmercury.co.uk/news/tributes_to_inspirational_father_mark_crick_who_died_while_snorkelling_in_the_caribbean_1_2596639 This month the LNU field meeting is at Priory Farm near Binbrook. See details below. There are lots of good events and courses listed below. I think the "All Welcome" message is getting across: if it is publicised in the Bulletin then you can come along. If in any doubt, make use of contact details, e.g. should it say numbers limited/Booking needed. It is great that so many different Lincolnshire wildlife organisations are now using the Bulletin as an informal network. Just run your eye down the list of events and courses and you will see what I mean. Roger *** LNU Events *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. *** Migrating Moorhens? *** In response to Marion Ellis' question about Moorhen Migration, Stuart Britton writes: Ringing birds is the most common way of tracking the movements of individual birds and Coot and Moorhen are no exception. To date, 53 British ringed Moorhens have been found abroad and 133 foreign ringed have been found in the UK. The vast majority involve the near continent with no fewer than 82 Dutch ringed birds found here. Coot are slightly different with 43 foreign ringed birds to the UK and 182 British ringed birds being found abroad in 18 different countries including Russia, Morocco and Sweden. This data is courtesy of the British Trust for Ornithology Website. From a local perspective, I recall a Coot ringed in Deeping St Nicholas in the 1980's being found at Lake Como in Italy. A Moorhen ringed in Holland was found dead in a harsh winter about 10 years ago by a local farmer at Thornton-le-Moor near Market Rasen. Finally, I caught my only Water Rail at Walesby Moor 3 years ago and was astonished to find it bore a Dutch ring! *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. DEEPING ST NICHOLAS 28.04.11 Mick Todd While working in a rape field I was surprised by a roe deer that wandered up to the edge of the field. I was stood in the rape, so was partially concealed and down wind. The deer stood at the edge of the field seemingly looking across the adjacent field to the main road beyond for a couple of minutes before turning and disappearing back into the rape. Later a marsh harrier was observed hunting over a newly planted potato field in typical harrier fashion. As the wind has switched to N/NE directions, we probably won't see any more for a while. 29.4.11 The drought must be making it very hard for Blackbirds, Thrushes and Robins to feed their first broods. I've regularly observed 2 male blackbirds searching for worms within 2 feet of each other in a newly planted flower bed which had been watered. Saw a male blackbird on a wire with a single small worm in his bill surveying the territory for a long time as if he'd run out of options. There aren't many snails around for thrushes to fall back on, either. Any worms I have dug up seem extremely sluggish; presumably dehydrated. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11. Roger Morris describes the course as follows:- An Introduction to Hoverfly Identification This course is designed to give the novice sufficient confidence to tackle these attractive and interesting flies. By the end of the second day most pupils can be expected to understand the critical parts of the keys that often cause trouble. The programme comprises a mixture of formal and informal sessions. Identification sessions use preserved material provided by the course tutors. Course literature has been designed to compliment the keys in Stubbs & Falk's British Hoverflies. A second session in September is scheduled to provide an opportunity for pupils to refresh their knowledge and have specimens confirmed. It will also give an opportunity to look at more challenging genera that often cause difficulties.
