Roger Morris describes the course as follows:- An Introduction to Hoverfly Identification This course is designed to give the novice sufficient confidence to tackle these attractive and interesting flies. By the end of the second day most pupils can be expected to understand the critical parts of the keys that often cause trouble. The programme comprises a mixture of formal and informal sessions. Identification sessions use preserved material provided by the course tutors. Course literature has been designed to compliment the keys in Stubbs & Falk's British Hoverflies. A second session in September is scheduled to provide an opportunity for pupils to refresh their knowledge and have specimens confirmed. It will also give an opportunity to look at more challenging genera that often cause difficulties. *** Wetlands of the Humberhead Levels *** Tom Hayek says: Please be sure to highlight that attendees must book as we have hired minibuses so places are limited. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. Steve French writes: Ermine Stoat being chased by a Rabbit! Date 24th January 11, time 12.00, Location South Highfields just outside Middle Rasen, Lincolnshire. I was inspecting my wildlife pond which is set in 8 acres of grass, trees and shrubs, something caught the corner of my eye, at first I thought it was a white bag, blowing in the wind. It was actually a Stoat dressed in white, the first Ermine I have ever seen, I was about 20 meters from him, hardly daring to breath I watched him scurrying about, on the hunt. As he passed by a shed, an adult Rabbit ran from underneath and chased the Stoat for a good 10 meters, the stoat found refuge under an adjoining shed, I always thought it was the other way around. Maybe the Rabbit may have had a nest of youngsters, even though it has been so cold I have seen some youngsters a week or so ago, or maybe it was a Buck Rabbit that was having non of it. Whatever the reason it was an amazing sight. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Thanks. FRAMPTON Barry & Jane Kyme Week ending Jan 23rd We are pleased to report that during the week we have had several sightings of our Barn Owl who appears to be healthy. Whilst sitting in my car watching the Barn Owl flying over the field next to our property, I was lucky to have a Merlin land in the tree right next to me and watch me closely for a minute or two before flying off. The Robins in the garden appear to have paired up now, we seem to have a pair to the rear of the property and for the time being we have seen a single bird at the front. A pair of Blue Tits were examining a nestbox very closely this afternoon. There are at least 2 Blackbirds using the birdtable which have a number of white feathers in the wings. An increased number of tree sparrows has been noticed on the bird feeders the last couple of weeks. An uncommon visitor on the lawn this afternoon, a Green Woodpecker, very busy, apparently digging very deep. GRANTHAM. David Clarke. 23/1/2011 We usually only get blue tits, dunnocks, robins and house sparrows in our very small town garden. This week however had been different. Two goldcrests have been seen several times and a pair of coal tits. Today was the best, a small flock of siskins and lesser redpolls were feeding in a silver birch for about 10 minutes also My daughter who lives close by has had a brambling several times this week in her garden. GRIMSBY(Central) 25/01/11 Mick Binnion Buzzard - on a weak thermal moving from North to South. (high altitude). The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work.
