Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** 'Orrible Eggers *** At this time of year a subspecies of human becomes active - the egg collector. This vile, outdated and illegal hobby needs to be obstructed by all of us. It is completely unacceptable and should be reported to the Police immediately. Ask for an incident number when you do to make sure there is no sweeping-under- the-carpet of your report! Wildlife Crime isn't high on the Police agenda, but it will get more attention if we report it. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Ring: 0300 111 0300 Don't put yourself in danger! It will be helpful if you are discrete when reporting bird sightings that might put nesting birds in danger. So from now on, please send hard information straight to bird recorders and keep reports to the Bulletin very general, or just don't sent in anything you may feel is sensitive. There is no point in leading the villains to the eggs. It helps me to do the right thing if you filter out anything best left unsaid. Thanks. Roger *** LNU Events *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php Unless otherwise stated, Indoor Meetings are held on Saturdays at the Whisby Education Centre, Whisby Nature Park, Moor Lane, Thorpe on the Hill, Lincoln and start at 2pm. Saturday, March 12, 2011 Annual General Meeting followed by the Presidential Address by Ken Rowland [Mainly for members, though others may attend but not speak or vote.] See section 11 for full programme. *** Barn Owl Mortality Locally *** Stuart Britton writes: I have been taking part in the national Barn Owl Monitoring Programme since 2003 on Sutton Settled Estates in the Stainton-le-Vale area of the Wolds. This entails monitoring 22 nest boxes and ringing the young and some adults in the nest. We get notification of found ringed birds occasionally but this December was unprecedented in that we were informed of three dead ringed birds found by estate workers in the space of three days, details as follows: Nestling ringed at Stainton on 2/7/0 found dead on 6/12/10. Adult male ringed at same location on 30/6/2004 also found dead on 6/12/2010 - both found in Stainton. Nestling ringed on 3/7/2008 at Ashby Puerorum found dead at Swallow on 8/12/2010. In addition, two further unringed birds were found dead in the area. I sincerely hope that some have survived to breed on the Estate in 2011 but I won't know until we check the boxes in May/June. *** Owls Seen *** R & K Heath Sunday 20th Feb. Good early morning for Barn Owls Gedney Dyke 2 Hunting road side by Hovenden House grounds. Holbeach range 2 Hunting the saltmarsh on Holbeach range near Fleet Haven outfall. Keal Hill 20.02.11 Mick Todd While driving home from Spilsby tonight about 4pm, we passed a barn owl hunting along side A16 at bottom of Keal Hill. A second barn owl was spotted 10 mins later flying along Catchwater drain in Stickney then as we approached High Ferry garage a third barn owl was to be seen hovering over a dyke, again next to A16. *** BTO 'Birding in Lincs & Notts' Conference *** Andrew Chick writes: The upcoming BTO 'Birding in Lincs & Notts' Conference will take place on April 16, 2011 at Riseholme College Campus, University of Lincoln, Lincoln LN2 2LG. The first BTO conference in the area, this exciting event will combine talks and updates from national BTO surveys such as Bird Atlas 2007-11 and the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) as well as fascinating insights into local RSPB Reserves, all you need to know about nesting and nest boxes, birds of prey in the area and what you might find in a ringers' mist net. This event represents a great way of meeting your local BTO Regional Representative, BTO staff from our headquarters in Thetford and BTO members and volunteers. There will also be stalls and displays from local bird clubs and conservation organisations and a first class raffle – how can you afford not to come! Conference tickets are great value, at only £14.00 per person which includes tea, coffee & biscuits and a buffet lunch so book soon to avoid disappointment! For more information and to book a place, please follow the link below: http://www.lincsbirdclub.co.uk/Articles/BTO_in_Lincs_&_Notts_Conference.pdf *** Identifying Hoverflies - have you registered? *** Information from Ian Macalpine-Leny Whisby Education Centre in conjunction with Roger Morris are holding an Introduction to Hoverflies event on 26th and 27th March 2011 and 24th September 2011 (3 day course). Roger Morris describes the course as follows:- An Introduction to Hoverfly Identification This course is designed to give the novice sufficient confidence to tackle these attractive and interesting flies. By the end of the second day most pupils can be expected to understand the critical parts of the keys that often cause trouble. The programme comprises a mixture of formal and informal sessions. Identification sessions use preserved material provided by the course tutors. Course literature has been designed to compliment the keys in Stubbs & Falk's British Hoverflies. A second session in September is scheduled to provide an opportunity for pupils to refresh their knowledge and have specimens confirmed. It will also give an opportunity to look at more challenging genera that often cause difficulties. *** Grantham Area Group of the LWT *** Barkston & Syston Village Hall 7.30 p.m. Fri 11th March Nature Reserves in NE Leicestershire & Rutland Fri 8th April Churchyard Nature Reserves God's Acre Project at St. Swithun's Long Bennington Gordon Scott *** Alkborough Flats Event *** Sarah Killick writes: Please Note - Booking is essential for all events, call 01724 721269 to book your place. 20th March - 9.30am & 11.30 am Minibus tours Join the site staff on a drive around the Flats visiting different parts of the site including the breach. Our local female Barn Owl is alive and well and hunting around the fields. I haven't seen the male lately but that is not unusual. Yesterday, I saw her round the back of our shed and she either dived down on something or went to 1 of the boxes behind there, I'm hoping it was the latter as it would be great to get them used by owls rather than the pigeons. 2 or 3 weeks ago I heard Tawnies calling for several nights in succession. Last summer I saw a Tawny Owl fledgling a few hundred yards up the road so hopefully they will stay around too. I am discreetly keeping an eye on the boxes. The Blue Tits are busy inspecting their boxes. TATTERSHALL Tattershall, Hunters Lane, Grid Reference: TF 22011 58731 Name: Les Binns Date: 24/2/11 at 11:45 Sighting: Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) x1 WAINFLEET CONSERVATION PONDS 26/02/2011 Roy and Kath Pearson We managed a fifteen minute count between very heavy showers. The bird species and numbers were very low, perhaps reflecting the disturbance caused by work on the adjacent River Steeping, which has seen the river dredged and the vegetation (and trapped rubbish) removed. A Barn Owl was hunting and we saw it pounce several times, but didn't note any success. Hunting overnight and today would have been difficult owing to heavy rain and I suspect it was getting desperate for food. Four Little Egrets were recorded, but duck numbers were very low with only Mallard (8) and Teal (3) being recorded. Three Red-legged Partridges were seen on the adjacent grassland, this species being only infrequently recorded here. Twelve Reed Buntings were counted and it seems as though this species is returning to the ponds having been in small numbers over the winter, perhaps due to relocation to the saltmarshes for food. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work.
