Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** As the Fungus season approaches it is time to dust off identification guides and prepare to refresh our skills. Ray Halstead will welcome your records, but please make them reasonably thorough. Specific location details are important, grid references and associated vegetation and habitat notes can be very helpful. If you need help, please ask Ray before emailing a photo, as your description may be sufficient for identification. It is always helpful to ask first about sending photos. Ray's contact details are: ray.halstead@tiscali.co.uk There are some useful fungus sites on the Web, but like identification guides, they seldom give the whole story and you should not be surprised to find that things are more complicated that you had hoped! Here are a few links: Ken Rowland's fungus page on the LWT website: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/species/fungi/index.php Wild About Britain http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fungi Fungi World http://www.fungiworld.co.uk/ BMS Edible and Poisonous Fungi - important to read http://www.nifg.org.uk/edible_fungi.htm CABI/BMS Database and checklist http://www.fieldmycology.net/ British Fungi - keys http://www.fieldmycology.net/GBCHKLST/key.asp?KeyID=8 British Mycological Society http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/ Mushroom Pickers' Code http://www.britmycolsoc.org.uk/mycology/conservation/code-of-picking/ There is a great deal of interest in Edible Fungi, but it is vital to know what you are doing if you intend to try this. A mistake can be fatal. I have tried some 46 species, but only consider about 8 worth the trouble. As a general rule I would say "Don't do it!". Ray's LNU Autumn Fungus Foray is detailed in section 11. p.s. Don't forget that recorders can be very busy at peak times of the year, and Ray's peak is approaching now! Do please allow them time to get back to you. Thanks. Roger *** Next LNU Event - updated *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Finally 6 – 8 harbour porpoises were spotted on Sunday afternoon from Winthorpe Tower. This project is run by Lincs Wildlife Trust and SeaWatch Foundation. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. *** Wasp Deaths *** Rodge Brownlow writes: Friday 26th August: whilst walking down a woodside in the pouring rain I noticed large numbers of wasps going into the wood. Expecting to find a nest I followed them but found none. Instead they were swarming around willow trees, landing on leaves alive or dead and on the bark. As willow was the initial source of aspirin I wonder if they were getting a buzz from it or is there another explanation? Alan Phillips replies: I would imagine they were attracted to aphid honeydew or secreted sugars from the willow. It is that time of year when their staple food source (sugars and proteins), that they obtain from the wasp larvae (via trophallaxis), starts to dry up as the end of the nest cycle approaches. Consequently large numbers look for sustenance elsewhere, thereby causing the usual problems when they come into contact with us. There may be a link to Methyl alicylate which is produced from salicylic acid, which aspirin derives from. It is released in some plants when they area damaged by herbivorous insects. It is thought it may attract beneficial insects which may prey on the herbivorous ones. Methyl alicylate has also been used in research on bees as it is used by them to synthesise pheromones. In its purist form is also toxic, has been used in research into chemical warfare agents, and is sometimes used in mouthwash! Alan adds: Regarding Jayne Knight's ants: There are currently 4 species of 'yellow ant' in Lincolnshire, Lasius flavus, L. umbratus, L. mixtus and L. sabularum. The latter 3 are all social parasites of other species of Lasius, i.e. queens of these species invade host nests and her progeny eventually replace the host population. These species are in the main subterranean and feed mainly on root aphid honeydew, so seeing them above ground or in houses is not usual. Jayne subsequently offered to supply some specimens or invited me to collect them myself. Coincidentally, as I was due to visit Whisby Nature Park as part of an ongoing long-term bee and wasp survey, I arranged to drop-in on Jayne at Lincoln and collect a few specimens. None were found in the house but the ones located in the garden, under a bird bath, turned out to be Lasius flavus, or the 'yellow meadow ant'. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11. Sorry about all this, but it is not my fault. There is no valid reason for any ISP to block Bulletins simply because a particular domain has been used for spam. In the case of Hotmail, they have some cheek blocking me, considering the deluge of spam I get from Hotmail addresses every week! If your ISP sets its security measures high, there should be some way to "whitelist" my sender address to let Bulletins through.
