Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** Good walkabout this week. Took in the common seal colony at Blakeney Point and numerous other good places round the corner in Norfolk. Thanks to all who have sent reports. I have now managed to wade through 8 pages of e-mails! I think I am now ready to send it out. Please excuse any typos - difficult to avoid sometimes when rushing. Roger *** Next LNU Event - updated *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Includes an opportunity to investigate the LNU Collection and encourage students to use them. Habitats: Parkland, woodland, lake. Leaders: Brian Hedley 07989 665794 brian_hedley@hotmail.com (afternoon) and Colin Smith (evening) 07595 414318 *** Cetacean-watching - help welcome *** Dave Miller writes: National Whale & Dolphin Watch weekend ran last weekend with dedicated watches taking place at Anderby Creek, Winthorpe Tower, with kind permission from the Coast Watch Institute, and at Gibraltar Point. Finally 6 – 8 harbour porpoises were spotted on Sunday afternoon from Winthorpe Tower. This project is run by Lincs Wildlife Trust and SeaWatch Foundation. I am recruiting volunteers to do effort-based watches along the Lincs coast to get information on movements and patterns along our coast. Volunteers can spend as much or as little time as they like, it all helps building a picture. If you are interested please contact Dave Miller, Coastal Ranger, on 07919 326646 or dmiller@lincstrust.co.uk *** Wash Trips *** Steve Keightley writes: Birdwatching In the Wash As usual, I am organising a couple of birdwatching trips into the Wash this autumn, on board Mystere, There are still places available on Sunday 9th October, departs Sluice Bridge Boston, at 0700. This is an 8 hr trip and we will go out into the Wash, and depending upon the weather will be searching for seabirds (we also usually see Common and Grey Seals and a good variety of other bird species) The boat has all facilities on board, and cost is £30 per person. Further details available from myself on 01205 290233. *** Upcoming Events at Alkborough Flats *** Anna Moody sent in the following information: Friday 26th August, 7.30pm. Bats and BBQ, £7 per person including BBQ Booking is essential for all events. Please call 01724 721269 to reserve a place. *** Please watch out for... *** Charlie Barnes wants us to look out for: "Pyrrhalta viburni, the viburnum leaf beetle, named the number 1 pest species in gardens by the Royal Horticultural Society, is apparently quite scarce in Lincolnshire. Is this true? There are currently only 25 records in the county database from central Lincolnshire. They feed on native and introduced species of Viburnum with the larva, capable of skeletonizing whole leaves, doing the most damage in May - June. About now, the adults which are brown and 5-6mm in length (see http://goo.gl/rxkG7 ), should be starting to appear and I would be very interested to see photos or specimens of suspected Pyrrhalta viburni from Lincolnshire, on garden ornamentals or wild plants." Charlie Barnes Biodiversity Services Officer Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership charlie.barnes@lincsbiodiversity.org.uk Also - look out for.... When there is a lot of information I will stick to highlights. Please visit the RBA website for updates or fuller details. No reports put in this week as I have been away. [Please mention the Bulletin if you decide to subscribe.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. LINCOLN SK972739 W/E 13/08/2011 Jayne Knight Noticed around 10 Swifts hawking overhead yesterday (12/08) lunchtime. The usual birds left eleven days ago. Regarding ants - for 12 years, since moving into the current ground floor flat, have shared a bedroom with a colony of yellow ants, Lasius umbratus, I assume. Only noticeable in the Spring when they would refurbish/extend the colony and deposit tiny grains of soil out their tunnel located between the wall and the door frame onto the carpet. Also for a couple of years there was a small swarming of their flying offspring, resulting in quite a tangle in the net curtain. Thankfully most of the swarming took place outside in the gap between footpath and external bathroom wall, don't know if these ants taste sweeter than the more common brown species but it was comical to see blackbirds, sparrows, tits and starlings almost forming an orderly queue to munch on the emerging insects. This year there was some evidence of excavation in the bedroom, but no swarming. The colony seems to have moved further out into the back garden, part of the new nest being under the bird bath, causing the ants consternation when I remove it for cleaning. Last year there was also a turf war between the yellow and brown ants - brown invading and the yellow forming a line just inside the gaping join between two pieces of concrete, abdomens pointing skyward and, I assume, spraying formic acid at the intruders. Fascinating. LINCOLN SK972739 W/E 20/08/2011 Jayne Knight Update to my correspondence sent last Friday - still a couple of Swifts around. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. LACEBY 19/08/2011 Mick Binnion Our local Badgers seem to have had a tough weaning this year. Usually they are three to a sow. This year we only have two and even singles. I've watched Badgers since I was ten, even in 76 the production of cubs wasn't this low. I can't replace the lack of earthworms, but I am feeding granny smiths in 8, the odd pear, stale bread and stoned plums. How is the rest of the county doing (without exact locations)? Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11. Also mail failure for some live, tinyonline, tiscali, karoo, ntu, lineone, me, f9, plus, gmail, onetel and talktalk users. Sorry about this, but it is not really my fault. If your ISP sets its security controls high, there should be a way to "whitelist" my sender address to let Bulletins through. Please see if you can discover what they recommend. If you all do it they might get the message, but you will find a few ISPs try to blame everyone but themselves. There is no valid reason to block the Bulletin simply because some spammers are thought to be sending mail via a particular domain.
