[Or cancel!] E-mail: rparsons@enterprise.net ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** The first Bulletin of August! Where has this year gone? I plan a bit of a walkabout this coming week, so will put out an early Bulletin on or about the 12th. The subsequent Bulletin will probably be the weekend of 20th/21st. You may not receive my customary quick acknowledgement, but please keep those contributions coming and I will catch up ASAP. If "Flying Ant Day" is a feature of July, then the August treat is the best meteor shower of the year, the Perseids. They usually peak on the 12th, but Paul Money's excellent "Night Scenes 2011" tells me that this year's is on the morning of the 13th between 7 and 9am. Perseids meteors can be seen from about now, increasing in frequency up to the 13th, then tailing off to about 22nd August. If you are bat watching, or moth trapping, glance upwards from time to time. [The full moon could spoil the view somewhat.] Let us know if you are lucky. Note - you do not need a telescope or binoculars to see meteors. You just need to look up and wait. It is best to make yourself comfortable. e.g. in a deckchair with a warm blanket and hat to keep off the mosquitoes. One of my pupils insists that his trampoline is the best tool for astronomical observations - he just lies back on it and looks skywards! See: http://meteorshowersonline.com/perseids.html Please keep your regular reports coming in for the Bulletin or send them directly to LNU Recorders if you prefer. http://www.lnu.org/recorders.php Roger *** Next LNU Event - updated *** For LNU meetings also see www.lnu.org/events.php See section 11 for full programme. Bats and BBQ, £7 per person including BBQ Booking is essential for all events. Please call 01724 721269 to reserve a place. *** Please watch out for... *** Charlie Barnes wants us to look out for: "Pyrrhalta viburni, the viburnum leaf beetle, named the number 1 pest species in gardens by the Royal Horticultural Society, is apparently quite scarce in Lincolnshire. Is this true? There are currently only 25 records in the county database from central Lincolnshire. They feed on native and introduced species of Viburnum with the larva, capable of skeletonizing whole leaves, doing the most damage in May - June. About now, the adults which are brown and 5-6mm in length (see http://goo.gl/rxkG7 ), should be starting to appear and I would be very interested to see photos or specimens of suspected Pyrrhalta viburni from Lincolnshire, on garden ornamentals or wild plants." Charlie Barnes Biodiversity Services Officer Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership charlie.barnes@lincsbiodiversity.org.uk Also - look out for.... I hear it has suffered from this problem in recent months and recall similar issues at Kirkby on Bain, Snipe Dales, Far Ings: I could go on. The best way to stamp out such antisocial or criminal behaviour is to report it. The little gem of Hagnaby Fen needs our support. It is a great project and we should not allow it to be spoiled by the spoilers, of which there are many! If you read Garry Steele's bird report below you will understand its wildlife value. *** Mollusc Identification *** David Feld has kindly offered to assist readers to identify molluscs, both terrestrial and aquatic. Please e-mail him a description and he will advise you whether and where to send a photograph or an actual specimen. Contact: drf@dfeld.freeserve.co.uk *** Birdfair 2011 19th-21st August *** The British Birdwatching Fair in Rutland is within easy reach of Lincolnshire naturalists. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
