And please keep those reports coming. An old enemy, the Postcard Hoax, is circulating again. If you are unfamiliar with virus hoaxes, please read: http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/virus-coming-tell-all-your-friends Remember to keep your security measures up to date, Anti-virus and anti-spyware, firewalls, backups, the lot. Roger *** Illegal Hare Coursing *** This is the time of year when the hare coursers take to their cars to hunt Lincolnshire's hares. They will already have been around the county looking out likely spots. Once crops are in and the land is open we can expect to see them about. The advice is not to approach them as they may not appreciate your input! Ring the non-emergency police phone number and be ready to answer all the key points, date, time, place, details of vehicles, numbers of persons and dogs; the more information the better, but anything is better than nothing. Phone: 0300 111 0300 and when making your report make sure you ask for an incident number so the information is kept visible! Early intelligence improves the possibility of successful Police action - so do not be hesitant about reporting suspicious activity. If you are not yet a member of Farm & Country Business Watch, why not join up now? You can download an application form via the Lincs Police website. The following is background information provided by Paul Waring: The Marsh Moth was formerly reported in several counties, from East Anglia north to Yorkshire, with even one record from Hampshire, but currently it is known in the British Isles only from two coastal sites in Lincolnshire – Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve and Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, where it has become rare. Numbers of adult moths and caterpillars are monitored annually. The training event aims to explain how the latter is done and to train helpers. It involves sifting purpose-made piles of grass-cuttings in a standard way. This is an opportunity to see one of Britain's rarest and most endangered resident insects and to learn about what is being done to prevent its extinction in the British Isles. *** RSPB Coach Trip *** Jeremy Eyeons writes: COACH TRIP TO OLD MOOR RSPB RESERVE, SOUTH YORKSHIRE. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. GREAT CARLTONLMDB maintained drain Chris J Manning 12 August 2010 Mute Swan Pair of mute swans with 4 cygnets one of which is white. The following from Jessica Collinson via Google "The Polish mute swan is a 'pure white' version of a mute swan. The legs and feet are a pinkish-grey colour instead of the usual black colour. A pigment deficiency of a gene in the sex chromosomes is what causes the whiteness. When a female mute swan inherits only one melanin-deficient chromosome she will be a polish swan, whereas the male of the same parents will be normal. If the next generation is produced by two of their offspring the brood will contain numbers of both Polish and normal cygnets of either sex. Polish swans were given their name when they were imported from the Polish coast on the Baltic sea into London around about 1800. Mistakenly thought to be a new species they were given the name 'Cygnus immutabilis' (changeless swan). A picture and reports of two other sighting are on the Lincolnshire Bird Club web site. Although two thirds of the nest was gone, I could find no debris or dead birds on the ground. The recent fine weather has helped our house martins a lot, though, and all the second broods appear to have fledged. While they were feeding young, they seemed to hunt quite close to the nest sites, but now I see them travelling further afield, presumably to build their strength up for the long journey ahead. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
