The NNR includes the following sites: Chambers Farm Wood (please detail specfic area when reporting e.g. Ivy Wood, Little Scrubbs Meadow etc); College Wood, Cocklode & Great West Woods, Hardy Gang Wood, Newball Wood, Scotgrove Wood, Southrey Wood, Wickenby Wood Other woods included in the NNR but without public access: Stainfield Wood; Stainton & Fulnetby Woods (access by public bridleway only) Adrian Royle's website for photos of species from the Limewoods. http://www.flickr.com/photos/adiroyle/sets/72157616635241942/ *** Dormouse report *** Anne Goodall writes: The last dormouse monitoring session of the year was held on 15 October. Being a Friday, numbers were reduced a little by school/university/work commitments, but on a lovely warm morning, 10 DG members turned out. And the mice did us proud; 9 dormice found, the highest total for any check this year. Rather worryingly though, 6 of these were a mum with 5 still very small babies (the latest ever), and there has to be concern over whether these will manage to treble their current weight in the next month. There is a lot of food about at the moment - we recorded good amounts of hips, haws and sloes for a start - and a litter this late suggests either a second litter, or a young female breeding in her first year. Either of these are unusual, and suggest that this has been a good year for them. We also found a lot of new nests, even more than usual for the time of year, with the tubes particularly clearly in constant use. In fact, two mice were found in one tube, which is another first. After the check, the group went to see the 'wild nest' found last month in Little Scrubbs wood, and promptly found another only a few metres from the first. The check probably took longer than it otherwise might because everyone was so taken by the vast numbers and range of fungi, and of particular interest were a number of frothy white slime-moulds found in Big Meadow. Less happy was finding a newly dead redwing, showing signs of attack by sparrowhawk. Fancy surviving that long flight over the sea, to meet a Sprawk just when you thought you were safe! No more monitoring sessions this year, but there will be approximately monthly working parties through the winter, and we hope to have a website up and running before the spring. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
