As she came to the bottom of the bin she found a nest containing 92 snake eggs. Most of them seemed to have hatched off, but a few had failed. This made us wonder what the mortality rate of newly hatched grass snakes might be. I recall reading it was high, with many predators having them on the menu. Does 10% survival sound right? Update: Snake-expert, Chris Reading wrote to me to say: As for mortality, I know of no figures but would expect first year mortality, particularly during the first hibernation, to be pretty high and you are right that small snakes, and even large ones, are taken by all manner of predators from blackbirds to buzzards and, during hibernation, small mammals. I have found even large grass snakes with very clear bite marks and considerable damage to the tail and body in the early spring - when they are torpid they must be relatively easy prey for even mice, voles and shrews! I suspect 10% survival may be a little on the high side. If you consider that grass snakes are quite long lived and, for arguments sake, lay 100 eggs during their lifetime then only 2 need to survive to breeding age to maintain a stable population (one for the male and one for the female). This would give a mortality rate in the order of 98%! Great news though to have found an egg mass of over 90 eggs which probably represents at least 5 and maybe more large females. In the past (20+ years ago) I have found communal egg batches, in farmyard manure heaps, containing over 130 eggs, most of which hatched in the lab enabling me to measure and weigh them all. RSPB Frampton Marsh http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/framptonmarsh/index.asp Passage waders included a Pectoral Sandpiper from 12th, on and off until the end of the month, up to nine Little Stints and six Curlew Sandpipers. 60 Greenshanks on 12th was also a good count. Nine Gannets over the reserve on 25th was rather more unexpected. Two Black Terns on 6th were the only terns recorded during the month. New winter arrivals included three Whooper Swans on 18th and the first Lapland Bunting on 19th. A Garganey was also recorded on 19th. RSPB Freiston Shore http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/f/freistonshore/index.asp North-easterly winds on 6th produced a juvenile Sabine’s and eight Black Terns on the sea. A Honey Buzzard on 8th had probably roosted overnight on the reserve. A Redstart was seen on 17th and a Pied Flycatcher on 28th. Ducks began arriving in earnest from mid-month, with a huge count of 2,000 Wigeon on the lagoon on 28th. The reservoir hosted up to two Pectoral Sandpipers from 12th onwards, up to 13 Little stints and nine Curlew Sandpipers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
