Leader: Ray Halstead 07772 613640 ray.halstead@tiscali.co.u *** Short Message Service - Editor's observation *** I am getting to grips with the RBA SMS service. Very interesting. Must say I am still trying to get my head around the logic of pager bird reports saying "not seen" or worse "seen yesterday"! If a bird is not about, why say anything? *** Insects *** Alice Nunn writes: Just a comment on Sylvia's note on her insects. On Saturday the 2 Oct my garden (Winterton) was heaving with ladybirds, mainly 7 spot. They came out early in the year in March in reasonable numbers and have been fairly visible throughout. Not many wasps, but reasonable nos of various furry bees (sorry don't do bumble bee id!) Butterflies. Holly blues showed well early in late spring and I had second brood HBs in August. Also a few Common blues. Plenty of the usual whites, but not much else. Sm tortoishells, commas, red admiral, and occasional sp wood & peacock, but only in single figures- unlike last summer when my garden was full of them. The picture is clearly not consistent! *** Grimsby & Cleethorpes LWT *** Carolyn Lovely writes: On Monday 11th October 2010 you are invited to join us for an illustrated talk on "Weather and Clouds" with weather forecaster Holly Green from RAF Conningsby Meteorological Office. There will be special reference to local weather variations and she will show us how to predict the weather from cloud formations. This will be held in the banqueting room of Grimsby Town Hall and starts at 7.30 pm. Admission £2. There will be Trust goods stall, raffle and refreshments All are welcome to join us. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will sometimes withhold precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. Sensitive data should go directly to county recorders, please. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
