Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** We live, as the old Chinese curse puts it, "in interesting times". Government cuts and tough competition for funding environmental work will put pressure on professional and amateur natural history projects. We could see favourite wildlife organisations fighting hard to maintain income and pace of work. A wide range of events and activities gets a plug in the Bulletin. Please support these wherever you can. Good biological recording is key to good decision-making in environmental matters and we have an important part to play in this. Please keep your records coming in. Roger *** LNU Events Diary - Please Come Along *** For LNU meetings also see section 11 below and the website: www.lnu.org/events.php Next event: Sunday 27th June Joint meeting with British Dragonfly Society as part of National Dragonfly week Butterwick Common, SW of Scunthorpe. 12.00 for 13.00 start. Ian was born in Gainsborough and has spent most of his life in the Gainsborough area. He has a passion for photography, particularly weather related and is The Photo Gallery Editor for the Cloud Appreciation Society, yes you read that correctly it does exist, and it boasts a continually growing enthusiastic community of cloud appreciators from all walks of life, membership at present is over 21,000 in 80 countries worldwide. Ian’s photos feature regularly on local news programmes Calendar and Look North, and he has appeared on television with weather presenters Paul Hudson and Keeley Donovan of The BBC and recently appeared on the BBC Inside Out programme featuring an item from Anderby Creek on the east coast. Some may remember the live opening on Look North of The Cloud Bar Ian attended with Paul Hudson at Anderby Creek on April 1st 2009 and everyone thought it was a huge April fools joke, but the bar does exist, and is the only purpose built observation platform of its kind in the world, giving uninterrupted views of the glorious Lincolnshire coastline and endless skies in that area. Ian has also had his photos published in many books, on websites and in publications worldwide and is currently working on a number of programmes for BBC TV to be shown later in the year. Most recent was an interview for the BBC World Service on the One Planet programme. He will give an informal and varied talk consisting of information about how his interest came about with the great British obsession, the weather; will show a DVD containing spectacular photos from Cloud Appreciation Society members, that will assist in identifying the various cloud types, give information about the societies he is involved with and publications by them, continue with a DVD of photos he has taken locally, that he hopes will be found of interest and provide amusement, the talk will conclude with a question and answer session at an informal cloudspotting session outside the venue. For more information contact Ian on ian@cloudappreciationsociety.org Website details http://cloudappreciationsociety.org/ *** Grimsby & Cleethorpes LWT *** Carolyn Loveoy writes: Saturday 5th June 2010 a visit to Chambers Farm Wood and Little Scrubs Meadow. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
