Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. Frosts. Rodge Brownlow writes: This recent spell of morning frosts has resulted in damage showing in young trees. Walking through a 4 year old planation the ash, walnut and oak have all been badly scorched and the first flush of bracken has also been blackened to the ground. The trees usually regrow but sometimes the lead shoot is killed out leading to a forked tree. Jeremy Hutchinson writes: Just read about your Bee Fly (Bombylius major). I've seen several of these in our garden this Spring over the last 6 weeks or so during the warmer spells. They seem especially drawn to the Pulmonaria (Lungwort). What has happened to the Swifts? I'v seen few since my last report, but heard them screeching for the first time, but only very briefly, this evening. I cannot recall them being so late ever before. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. News from Bardney Limewoods NNR http://microsites.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Limewoods/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reports from the following locations will now be posted here to give an overview of Limewoods ecology. The NNR includes the following sites: Chambers Farm Wood (please detail specfic area when reporting e.g. Ivy Wood, Little Scrubbs Meadow etc); College Wood, Cocklode & Great West Woods, Hardy Gang Wood, Newball Wood, Scotgrove Wood, Southrey Wood, Wickenby Wood Other woods included in the NNR but without public access: Stainfield Wood; Stainton & Fulnetby Woods (access by public bridleway only) Adrian Royle's website for photos of species from the Limewoods. http://www.flickr.com/photos/adiroyle/sets/72157616635241942/ Anne Goodall writes: Members of Lincoln Conservation Group did a great job for the Dormouse Group on Sunday May 9th. Despite regular showers (and following a detailed check for bird nests of course), one half of the group carved a network of paths through nettle and bramble in a new area for dormice, while the remainder completed putting together and finishing off 28 new boxes. Finally the whole group erected the new boxes, ready for monitoring checks to begin shortly. Special thanks to young Chloe, who had responsibility for making sure every box was numbered, in order, with no duplicates, in spite of the way boxes kept being whipped away to the wood! Woodcock and nightingales. Nightingales seem to have been very late arriving, with my first records in two woods, Rand and Hatton Plantation, on April 30th. However since then, numbers do seem to have built up. Even by last weekend few were in 'good' song, but I heard 3 in Thistle Storr/College and 5 in Minting Park plantation. Woodcock seem to be around in very good numbers. My annual woodcock survey - 8 woods covered so far - is indicating roding numbers perhaps a third up on an average year in the best woods. No grasshopper warblers heard yet though. Any records of nightingales or GH from any of the Limewoods would be very welcome - actual named wood (ie NOT 'Chambers Farm Wood'!) or a grid ref please. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
