Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. C and D Robinson write: WOODHALL area Sights and Sounds this weekend. 1. One Water Vole in swimming in small stream, this is on the NW boundary of Moor Farm (LWT reserve on Wellsyke Lane Woodhall Spa) and the Golf Course at Bainland Park, Horncastle Rd Woodhall Spa. 25th April 2. Numerous Spotted and Green Woodpeckers seen and heard during afternoon 25th April 3. Several Cuckoos constantly calling to each other during afternoon 25th April Barn Owls Anna Moody writes in response to Alice's comments about barn owls at Alkborough: Alkborough is a great place to see barn owls and yes, you can almost guarnatee sightings at the times that Anne mentioned. There are 2 pairs of barn owls that nest in the local area and use the site most days. Regarding kingfishers, we often have quite a few kingfishers on site during the autumn and winter months but when the weather gets warmer numbers drop so that normally only one bird is seen. Typically no kingfishers are seen during May and June even though we do breeding bird surveys (a shortened version of the Common Bird Census) which should pick them up if they are on site during this time. Equally, with such a hard winter kingfishers might have suffered due to the bad weather but as I say, it might also be the time of year. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
