Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editorial - Events *** Looking at the events this month, there are some cracking ones on offer. The Revesby Estate was the country seat of Sir Joseph Banks and his significance will be known to all readers of the Bulletin, or it should be! A visit to the reservoir and woodland is an opportunity not to be missed. Tortoiseshell Wood in early spring is another date for your diary. The Wold Newton walk in the AONB sounds great too. Added to this is an interesting selection of talks and presentations, and support is always welcome for these. I have tried to spot all the line breaks and html tags and get them sorted, but may have missed a couple - so sorry for that. Bit of an eye infection has messed up my vision. Roger *** Boosting Bulletin Readership *** At present we have just under 900 readers. I would love to get it up to the 1000 point. If you know anyone who might enjoy receiving it, please tell them about it. Thanks. BARLINGS to REEPHAM Jo Bramwell 7/3/10 Walking along the lane midway between the two villages, I caught sight of a fox, which trotted across a field till it met the ditch and hedge at the boundary, whereupon it followed the ditch, coming closer towards me. On scenting me, it stopped, looked, hesitated, and dived into the ditch immediately below a very bright yellowhammer on the hedge. This was followed by another movement in the same field, which turned out to be a hare. It lolloped in a leisurely fashion part way across the field, then sat and looked around for a few minutes before lolloping away, seemingly totally unaware of either the fox or me. I walked on for a few yards, when a barn owl flew past and started hunting not far from where the two animals had been. Not a bad ten minutes! Also seen: 30 or so fieldfares in a field, and another hare, both towards Low Barlings. I wasn't expecting much but it was good to see my regular, happy hunting ground again. As usual lots of changes have been made over the winter, more areas opened up to let the natural light in to help flowers and insects. Recent counts of Brown Hairstreak eggs have shown that all the work over recent years has really benefited the population. A walk around Little Scrubbs and on to 5 Ways and then the Triangle and the Brickpit produced absolutely nothing with 6 or 8 legs. Some 4 legged critters - Muntjacs x5 and a Brown Hare. No toads either but then the ponds were still frozen. Back to Ron's Diner which was heaving with birds, mostly Tits, a few Chaffinches, Siskins and Redpolls and an assortment of bird photographers with long lenses. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
