Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** LNU Events Diary - Please Come Along *** For LNU meetings also see section 11 below and the website: www.lnu.org/events.php Next event: Sunday 27th June Joint meeting with British Dragonfly Society as part of National Dragonfly week Butterwick Common, SW of Scunthorpe. 12.00 for 13.00 start. NEW INFORMATION Park at fishermans car park at SE8476 0630. To reach car park follow track off Chapel Lane in East Butterwick at sharp bend. Habitat: Pond, Marsh, Ditches. Leaders: Brian Hedley 07989 665794 brian_hedley@hotmail.com and Paul Kirby. *** Long-legged Buzzard Lookalike *** Stuart Britton writes: Re Rob Telford's entry in the recent Bulletin, the nearest this species occurs is South-East Europe. It is highly unlikely to be a general migrant but an escaped Falconer's bird can never be discounted. It is always good idea to look at a birds' range and habitat requirements before comparing photos in a Field Guide. *** Rough Hawksbeard *** Annette Faulkner writes: On 8 June we had to pay a visit to a bat roost owner at Whaplode, and decided to take a back lane off the B1165 en route there. This is Spark's Lane, grid ref at centre TF316218. On the B1165 200m to the west of it we had noticed patches of a large yellow multi-headed 'dandelion' which looked like a cross between beaked hawksbeard, which is out now, and perennial sow thistle, which isn't. But once in Spark's Lane we found it was everywhere. On the way back we stopped to collect a piece to confirm the identification - which was rough hawksbeard, Crepis biennis, which I have only seen once before in this area, when two plants turned up in the Vernatt's Local Nature Reserve in Spalding. It is the third of the Crepis group, the other two being beaked hawksbeard, as noted above, and smooth hawksbeard, the smallest of the three, which will be out soon. It is a most spectacular and showy plant, growing to up to about two feet. Worth looking out for. *** Purple Heron Question *** Val Nuttall asks: I would like to know if a purple heron has been sighted at Far Ings. I was watching one with a friend at 8.45 this evening from the Miles Hopper hide. It was motionless with its back towards us for 20 minutes, sometimes swivelling its head towards us, then flew off. There was a clear view of the contrasting colours on its back and the dramatic, striped neck. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. WHISBY Phil Porter reports: Two unusual occurrences at Whisby Nature Park recently involved beetles. The first was the discovery of a parasitized 7-spot ladybird, immobile on a leaf with a fuzzy pinkish package trapped between its legs. This is the result of an attack by a tiny braconid wasp, the female of which stings the ladybird, injecting an egg. This then hatches into the larval wasp which subsequently grazes on the fat reserves and reproductive system of the ladybird without killing it. When the time for pupation approaches, the larva chews its way out of the ladybird but, according to the books, not before severing the motor neurons of the host’s legs so that it becomes immobile. The larva them spins a cocoon between the ladybird’s legs, using the warningly coloured host as a shelter during its further development, before emerging and flying away, leaving the still living ladybird to starve to death. Having put the whole scene into a tube for observation, I was surprised a few days later to find the ladybird vigorously attempting to kick off the cocoon so evidently it had not suffered total immobilisation. Unfortunately, stressed ladybirds also reflex- bleed stickily from their leg joints so it had ended up more gummed together than before. At this stage I put it out of its misery after carefully retaining the cocoon which duly hatched into the wasp after a few days more. It is called Dinocampus coccinellae and is thought to be increasingly troublesome as a parasite, affecting large proportions of the population. The second beetle mystery was a small rotund shiny green beetle with an enormously distended abdomen, which I imagined would have been another individual harbouring some kind of parasite in its tissues. Richard Davidson then noticed a picture of a leaf beetle Gastrophysa viridula in which the female takes on this appearance prior to egg- laying. This was a species I had never seen before but it is apparently frequent on dock plants. There have been two new site records of hoverfly species seen recently; Platycheirus granditarsis is an attractive orange-red and black fly with characteristic spurs on the front tarsi. It is characteristic of the sort of damp grassland that is quite frequent at Whisby and is said to be potentially frequent in this habitat being generally distributed in England. The other was Chalcosyrphus nemorum which is much scarcer in the country and with few Lincolnshire records. It is more of a woodland insect which is moderately associated with permanent woodland as a habitat. The summering adult Mediterranean Gull is still daily at Grebe Lake. Turtle Doves seem to have taken a bad knock this year after a very few singing birds in early May, none have been seen or heard recently. This will have been the first time such a thing has happened at Whisby since the reserve was set up twenty years ago. Against all trends Turtle Doves had seemed particularly secure here last year. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Thanks. BOSTON 13/06/2010 Roy and Kathleen Pearson We did the RSPB garden count today in our garden in the southern suburbs of Boston and the results were remarkably good, with 18 species being recorded in one hour. Even this didn't include some frequent visitors to the garden such as Magpie, Long-tailed Tit or Jackdaw, which seem to have taken the day off. For the first time a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker was recorded being fed by its mother. A disappointment was the recording of only one Blue Tit, our box having failed this year owing to - we think - predation of the adults by Sparrowhawk. Results (counting the highest number seen at one time, not the total using the garden over the timed period) were:- Blackbird 2(Adult) 2(Juv) Blue Tit 1 Chaffinch 2 Collared Dove 2 Dunnock 1 Goldfinch 3 Great Tit 4 Greenfinch 2 House Sparrow 3 Robin 1 Starling 16 Swift 1 Woodpigeon 2 Wren 1 Song Thrush 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 2 Black-headed Gull 3 Sparrowhawk 1 MOOR FARM LNR TF226635 Jacquie Harrison & John Margetts 6 June 2010 Birds (Jacquie) Barn Owl chicks in nesting box Blackbird Chaffinch Coot Crow Cuckoo (heard, not seen) Great Tit Greater Spotted Woodpecker (mother and chick?) After a couple of weeks one of the eggs disappeared and now another has gone. There is no sign of an egg in the water nor any shell around the nest. Can anyone explain to us the likely cause? Two years ago another pair nested there and we found the cob dead on the nest one morning. The pen raised a couple of cygnets although these were killed after a few weeks. On 26th both Black Tern and Little Stint put in an appearance and on 29th a pair of Black- winged Stilts were in front of the Visitor Centre for an hour. RSPB Freiston Shore A Curlew Sandpiper was seen on 3rd, then a single drake Garganey showed very well from 4th - 14th. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work.
