Saturday, February 13, 2010 Recorders' Meeting The annual reports from the LNU recorders for 2009. Always very good. All welcome. *** Sutton Wreck *** Stuart Britton answers: A partial answer to Keith Halton's query. I can remember playing on and around the "wreck" over 50 years ago! Prior to the flood defence work carried out 10ish years ago, the beach was flat with breakwaters providing superb pools for crab hunting! The wreck was always visible at low tide but the addition of thousands of tons of sand covered it for some time. According to the British Archaeology News from 1997, it could be either "The Acorn" wrecked in 1901 which used to convey ice from Norway to Grimsby for the fishing industry or a locally built fishing boat from the 19th century. In the area there is also a mid-Saxon hurdle which was either part of a fish trap or piece of fencing intended for dry land use. Take your pick! William Gordon added: It was interesting to hear about this, as I left Lincolnshire some ten years ago. That wreck (and the other one further up towards Huttoft Bank) was covered up during the sand nourishment programme that was going on in that area right up to the time I was leaving (they removed the lovely old wooden groynes at the same time.) The wrecks (along with the prehistoric 'petrified forest' which would appear during the low tide season) were a picturesque feature of that lovely beach. I was told by local people the wrecks were indeed fishing vessels that had been beached around the 18th Century, so were part of the heritage of that coastline. So it would seem that once again nature is winning over 'development'! I wonder if the lovely sea grasses are returning, and the wonderful pebbles & shells I used to collect (which I still treasure here) have also been 'uncovered'? You should be able to find out more details of the vessels via the local paper (Mablethorpe & Sutton Standard) who have an extensive archive department. *** Weather Link from Noel Loxley *** Who says “Worth a look.” http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ *** Bird of Prey Photography Days *** I have had an email from Lewis Phillips the photographer, who says: I am running local Bird of Prey Days again. All the info is on my new website at www.wildshots.org.uk *** Scatsite? *** John Cowell, Theddlethorpe, writes: Are there any websites (preferably) or books which help to identify animals by their droppings? There are several interesting specimens found in the Theddlethorpe Dunes. One which puzzles me is the black elongated dropping usually placed in a prominent position (to mark a territory?) which ios very like the habit of the pine marten we used to have in our garden in Scotland? Thanks if you can help? *** Request for Neuroptera Records from *** Charlie Barnes Biodiversity Services Assistant Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership I would be very interested in receiving any records of the Neuroptera and their allies (that is, lacewings - Neuroptera, alderflies - Megaloptera, snakeflies - Raphidioptera and scorpionflies - Mecoptera) from Lincolnshire and would be happy to receive and identify specimens. They are a very understudied group (the Lincolnshire Records Centre database is no exception, with less than 100 records, the vast majority being the alderfly Sialis lutaria) with very little known about their distribution and biology, and I am sure Lincolnshire has more to offer. Contact: cbarnes@lincstrust.co.uk tel: 01507 526667 fax: 01507 525732 www.lincsbiodiversity.org.uk *** RSPB South Lincs February Events *** On Sunday 7th February, the R.S.P.B. South Lincs Local Group will be hosting a guided walk in Bellmount Woods, near Belton Park, Grantham, starting at 10-00 a.m. The walk will lead from the car park, up a gentle slope, passing Bellmount Tower, before entering the various rides and footpaths through the woods. The walk will be led by members of the Group who will be able to point out the various species of flora and fauna seen as the woods recover from the recent snow and winter weather. The walk will end at Bellmount Tower, which will be opened by kind permission of the National Trust to enable the Group to climb the tower and look over the magnificent views of the estate and beyond. Suitable clothing for the weather on the day is recommended as there will be little shelter from any inclement weather, stout footwear is also essential. If you have binoculars, please bring them along, although a limited number may be available for loan for the duration of the event. Spaces on this walk, for which there will be no charge, are limited. To book your place, and obtain full details of the meeting point, please contact the organiser, Robert Townhill, on Tel 01400 230445 or e-mail at robert.townhill@btinternet.com On Thursday 25th February, the Group have arranged an Illustrated Talk at the Sam Newsom Music Centre, Boston, starting at 7-30 pm. The talk, entitled "Spitzbergen" will be given by Ian Rowlands. Ian worked for the RSPB and various Wildlife Trusts before moving to Scotland in 1989, founding Speyside Wildlife. He is a proloific writer, lecturer and one of the most experience wildlife and bird guides in the country. Now based in Southern England, he is co-owner of the company Planet Whale and works on the Committee of the Whale and Dolphin Charity ORCA, but still finds time to watch wildlife for pure enjoyment. Spitzbergen is only 800 miles from the North Pole, but ocean currents make it the easiest-to-reach Arctic. Join Ian as he journeys amidst peaks, glaciers and sea ice which make up the wild ice kingdom that is Spitzbergen. See incomparable birds like the long tailed skua and king eider and watch the polar bear stalking his prey of seals and walruses. Using much of his own material, Ian will help the audience live their own Arctic dreams. Admission is £3-50 for non members, £2-00 for members, with children being admitted at half price. Light refreshments will also be available during the mid session interval. *** Alkborough Flats Events *** Sarah Pimm writes: 5th February, 4pm Winter Wonder See wildlife in a whole new light. FENTON SK846 767 Richard Fox 14th January 2010 Using the feeding station was an all black Blackbird (including bill and iris) The reference books refer to 1st year males as having a black bill but this bird looked an adult bird with no brownish tinge to the primaries normally associated with sub adult males. Would this have been a melanistic bird? Can any 'birders' out there throw any light on my observation. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
