Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Editor writes *** Winter may have a lot to throw at us yet, but walking along the Witham Bank on Sunday there were violets in flower, and snowdrops and aconites are up in the garden. Willows show signs of breaking bud and there are catkins to be seen in the hedgerows. Winter records tend to focus on the comings and goings of birds, but soon we can start to record other groups, the plants, insects and other invertebrates, the amphibians and reptiles. Observations of first flowerings and insect emergence will give us an idea of the impact of the winter. Eyes open everyone. Reports please. Astronomy tip for Valentine's Day. If skies are clear at dusk look to West southwest and pick out cluster of the new Moon, Venus and Jupiter just above the horizon. Then try to find Mars high in the east, blazing red. I was delighted to see two obliging waxings in a shrub by the entrance to the car park at Boston Pool on Saturday. It was well worth the detour to admire these spectatular creatures, so tolerant of their admirers. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. HORKSTOW Jenny Haynes It wasn't until I did the RSPB gardenwatch survey at the end of January that I realised there were no longer any wrens in my garden and that I hadn't seen them for a while. There have been at least two (that I've seen) here for several years and I was wondering if others had noticed a decline in numbers. I'm assuming it was the bad weather that killed them off and if so, whether there are sufficient survivors to re-colonise. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
