Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Cold Spell Ahead? *** The Weather Outlook website is forecasting a cold winter through to February. See: http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/ You may have a chance to do some animal tracking in the snow. http://www.which.co.uk/documents/pdf/animal-tracks--154038.pdf *** Dead animals/Road-kills *** As we often mention in the Bulletin, a road-kill can be very important evidence. I was party to a very interesting e-mail conversation about a possible pine martin road-kill on the Revesby to Market Rasen route. Only a passing glimpse, so we can only wonder. If you spot a significant-seeming road- kill and it is safe to do so please record it with a photo and if appropriate arrange to recover the body for a post mortem. Mammal road-kills should be reported to Chris Manning on chris@lincsdeer.info or via the Bulletin, with dead Otters also reported to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 so they can collect the carcass for post-mortem research. Animals injured in road traffic accidents should be reported to the Police or RSPCA 0300 1234 999. Chris will be pleased to have photographic evidence if you are not confident about mammal identification, including road-kills and sightings, tracks and signs included. e.g. mink, polecat, even big cats! Road kills unfortunately provide 66.4% of badger records (442/666) and 61.4% of ferret records (27/44). While very sad, they do prove a record of distribution and can be used to influence future road design, for example the new dual carriage way between Lincoln and Newark has badger fences and underpasses along large parts of its length. *** LNU Events Diary *** For LNU meetings and updates see www.lnu.org/events.php or section 12 below. On Monday 29 Nov, with 10-12 cm snow on the ground, we experienced thunder and sheet lightning for about half an hour around 8pm, followed by a snow shower. An electric storm in freezing temperatures – I didn't think it was possible! Hard times for wildlife. Watched 2 bluetits trying to feed on pyracantha berries, not very successfully. Another bluetit on a steel feeder perch kept pecking at his feet for a couple of minutes and attempting to lift them, as if they were frozen onto the perch. The feeder is close to a window and I could see very clearly that he wasn't holding a seed and pecking at that. He freed himself eventually and I've placed plastic straws around the perches as a precaution. SPALDING H. Noon. WRANGLE COMMON 28/11/2010 Roy and Kath Pearson We decided to do a count for BTO BirdTrack today, in the hope that the inclement weather might produce something different. There were no unusual birds, but the presence of lying snow seems to have had its influence. Gull, corvid (only two Carrion Crows were recorded on the study site in one hour), Woodpigeon and finch numbers were very down; in the first two instances possibly as a result of no ploughing in the last few days. Finches were confined to one record of a Chaffinch and four Siskins feeding in Alders. All the ponds were frozen and the very large duck numbers normally seen were absent, with only two Mallards being recorded. The probability is that these have gone to The Wash, or onto flowing water in some of the nearby drains. The wet grassland was frozen and only one Snipe was flushed, though we later saw four others flying over. A single Redshank and three Curlews were seen, but we could not locate the flock. Once again perhaps, most of the birds have relocated to The Wash. A single Woodcock rose from a hedge where this species has not previously been recorded, whilst their normal wintering area was empty. An unusually large number of Blackbirds (56) were counted in the hedgerows. The stubble field was snow covered and no Yellowhammers were seen and only small numbers of Meadow Pipits and Skylarks. Recently there have been several large groups of Grey Partridges, but these were absent today. WRANGLE COMMON 04/12/2010 Roy and Kath Pearson We did a BirdTrack count on our study site today. Ducks and geese were again absent owing to frozen water courses and the frozen wet grassland produced few waders - a single Snipe and 13 Curlews. However there were good numbers of Woodcock in the hedges and we counted 10 in total. The hedges were full of Blackbirds again, though at 45, these were slightly down on our last count. Both tits and finches were in very small numbers with only two species of each recorded - Blue Tit (2), Great Tit (2), Chaffinch (2) and Siskin (2). Only two Redwings were seen and no Fieldfares, which are very elusive this winter. The large covey of Grey Partridges (13) is still with us and there were single records of Jay, Hen Harrier (Ringtail) and a Water Rail in a small reedbed. The most remarkable count of all was of 31 Corn Buntings feeding in the furrows of a recently ploughed field. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. A Water Pipit made a brief appearance on 1st, as did Frampton's first ever Bearded Tits (3) on 15th, but Lapland Buntings were a little more obliging, with up to eight seen.
