Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The LNU Weekly Bulletin *** A very satisfactory walkabout in the Lake District. Observed 2 otters playing and a male osprey bringing a fish to a juvenile. Added several unfamiliar plants to my list including lousewort, cow wheat, alpine sow thistle and great burnet. Heads up for the Perseid Meteors on the 12/13th. Roger *** Housemartin Rescue *** Silvia Fowler Raithby-cum-Maltby TF 309 847 July 2010 Should you find a collapsed housemartin nest – don’t give up too quickly! There are 10 nests on our house, 9 of which are already into their second brood. The last nest to be built, unusually under a south facing soffit, collapsed early on 17 July. We found 2 chicks on the ground, while 2 others had landed on the roof of a bow window below. We placed them in an artificial housemartin nest with some of their own nesting material. They were about half-way through their development, still quite helpless, wouldn’t gape or take any food or water. We placed the nest on top of the bow window with some shading, but the parents took no interest and by the afternoon started to rebuild the broken nest. Due to other commitments, we could not give the chicks any further attention that day. To our surprise 3 chicks were still alive by noon the next day and even took a little water from a pipette. We got the long ladders out and fixed the artificial nest under the soffit next to the original one. By late afternoon (about 34 hours after the collapsed nest was found) one parent started to feed the chicks while the other continued rebuilding the broken nest. By nightfall we heard continuous twittering from the artificial nest; chicks and parents appeared to be roosting in it. Over the next few days both adults resumed feeding and added a mud ledge to the artificial nest (nest box designers please note!). The entrance hole to the artificial nest is smaller than the natural ones, so we could only ever see one chick’s face and weren’t sure whether all three were still alive. On 27 July one parent resumed rebuilding the original nest, enlarging the basal cup. On 29 July we could clearly see 2 fledged chicks resting in this cup while one chick was still visible at the entrance to the artificial nest. On 31 July the 2 older chicks were evicted from this platform while one adult resumed rebuilding the nest in earnest. They came back to roost and by noon we could see 3 chicks sitting in the open nest cup and being fed occasionally. Having moved here during the winter, this is our first close encounter with house- martins. We find their capacity to survive quite amazing! *** RSPB Coach Trip *** Jeremy Eyeons writes: COACH TRIP TO OLD MOOR RSPB RESERVE, SOUTH YORKSHIRE. Sunday 17th October. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. *** Night Growl? *** John Laws writes: Some years ago, someone in Welton by Lincoln had Peacocks, and we had the odd cry in the night, but you soon got to know what it was, and anyone who like me, used to walking an old dog round the village late at night, got used to the night calls of owls etc, but lately I’ve heard a loud ARRRK and wondered just what was that! Some months ago I stepped out into my darkened garden, I live off Ryland Road, when I heard a rustling in my shrubs, I growled hoping it would scare whatever it was away, but stepped very quickly back indoors when whatever it was growled back. Editor adds: Any suggestions? *** Furry Bug Babies? *** Roy Harvey asks: A friend has sent some photos of a 'bug' that he filmed on rosebay willow herb. It appears to be a furry nest that contains babies. I should be grateful if you, or one of your contacts, could identify the creature. Editor adds: I will forward emails to Roy if you think you can help. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen and identified in flower.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
