Private site. 12.00 for 13.00 start. Later meeting at 19.00 for bats and moths. Park on verge of South Sea Lane at TA 313 048 near where track leads south to site (might be able to park closer depending on harvesting activity). Habitats: small woodland, ditches, marsh, pools and cattle pasture. Leaders: Brian Hedley (afternoon) 01427 718320 brian_hedley@hotmail.com Colin Smith (evening) csmith668@btinternet.com *** Bumblebees and Mites *** Alan Phillips writes: These mites hitch-hike a ride on the bees from flower to nest, nest to flower or bee to bee. They live off the detritus in the nests, so in that sense they do more good than harm. The problem arises if too many try to hitch-hike on a tired or old bee which often results in the bee being grounded and unable to fly. This is usually the circumstance most people notice the mites but most bees carry a few without ill effect. There are over 100 species of insects and mites that have been discovered living in bumblebee nests with the majority having little effect on the bees. Bombus hypnorum update: This bumblebee has now been recorded around five times in Lincolnshire: Gosberton Clough (2008), Whisby Nature Park (x2), Swinderby and Laughton Forest (2009). See current UK distribution map here: http://www.bwars.com/bombus_hypnorum_map.htm ; and also info on the Whisby records here: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/whisby/index.php?id=42 *** Birds on the move *** John Cowell writes on 30/9/09: Nothing exciting from Theddlethorpe this week but a great pleasure to see 40-50 Lapwings near Bardney Dairies (near Bardney) this morning, but we do not get many out here in Theddlethorpe! I have noticed a sudden silence in the Theddlethorpe Dunes this last week or so, the Whitethroats have gone? I have never seen so many in one small area as this year. *** Grimsby & Cleethorpes LWT *** Carolyn Lovely: On Saturday 12th September the group invite people to join them on a 3 1/2 - 4 mile stroll around a LEAF farm at the Lincolnshire village of Benniworth near Donnington on Bain. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. CARLTON LE MOORLAND Carlton le Moorland SK909 580 Thursday 27th August, noon I was working up a ladder when I heard the local Housemartins making a fuss, as I looked over my shoulder I saw a female Hobby cruise past: she was calling a soft double note quite unlike any call I've heard previously by a Hobby or any other raptor. I was aware of a number of other birds nearby, but couldn't see them clearly due to a couple of trees. I wondered whether they were Hobbies too, so fetched my binoculars as quickly as I could, by which time the Hobbies had drifted some distance to the north. There were at least four, I suspect five: they had dispersed over a wide area, so it was not possible to seee them all at once. They found a thermal and rose higher than I've ever seen Hobbies fly previously: they were invisible to the naked eye! I have seen Hobbies less than half a dozen times this year, but on all but one occasion they have been flying eastwards before dusk. By coincidence I had been speaking to the local farm foreman less than an hour earlier, who had told me that someone had informed him that there is a Hobby nest in an old Ash tree in one of the farm's fields 1+ mile to the east of us. I assume that the birds I saw were this family. When I became aware of Hobbies in his area in the early 1980s, they nested in a old Crows' nest in an oak about 1/2 mile south of the supposed current site. This area is virtually uninhabited, with little disturbance other than farm traffic. Interestingly, I've noticed in previous years (I made very few sightings in 2007 and 2008) that Hobbies often have a spell of hunting activity between noon and 13.00 hours. *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. The highlight however, was the Collared Pratincole that dropped in all too briefly on the 8th before heading off out towards The Wash. Luckily, it reappeared the next day and put on a fine show for most of the afternoon. Only the 4th Lincolnshire record, and the first to be twitchable. Also brief were the two Cranes that flew south over the reserve on the 7th. A Spotted Crake was found in the scrape on the 26th and stayed until 31st at least. It was incredibly elusive, but could be seen with dedication from the East Hide. Wader passage was slightly disappointing, but still consisted of at least 10 Little Ringed Plovers, at least one and up to four Little Stints for most of the month, five Curlew Sandpipers on the 5th with ones and twos present for much of the month, a peak count of 86 Snipe on the 14th, regular Spotted Redshank throughout the month, at least 15 Green Sandpipers on the 7th with many birds remaining all month and an incredible 14 Wood Sandpipers on the 9th, with up to eight birds seen regularly to the months end. Other highlights included a regular Montagu’s Harrier during the first half of the month, an Osprey that flew past on the 24th and a Black Tern on the reedbed on the 26th. Freiston Shore The undoubted highlight was an adult White-winged Black Tern that flew south on the 4th. Unfortunately it didn’t hand around to be appreciated, but presumably the same bird was later seen across The Wash at Snettisham. Other seabirds included an Arctic Skua past on the 5th. Black Terns were thin on the ground, with four on the 5th, three on the 7th and singles on 9th, 23rd and 26th. An Osprey arrived on the 9th and stayed all month, mainly to be found sitting on the wreck out on the mudflats. Waders were moving throughout the month, with a Little Ringed Plover on the 1st-3rd, four Wood Sandpipers on 7th, a peak count of 42 Greenshank on the 8th, three Curlew Sandpipers on 8th-9th and a Little Stint on the 31st. Passerines started to arrive later in the month, with eight Whinchats on 23rd increasing to 12 on 31st, Spotted Flycatcher on 25thj and a showy Pied Flycatcher on the 26th. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5. Although widespread in Europe, Bombus hypnorum, which has coined the name Tree Bumblebee because of its habit of nesting in tree cavities or bird nestboxes, was first found on the south coast of England in 2001. Since then it has gradually spread north as far as Northumberland (see map below). In Lincolnshire at present we have just one record for the species from Gosberton Clough near Spalding 2008. With records coming in from Yorkshire I'm sure its going unnoticed in this county so please keep an eye out especially in the south and west. So, have you seen one? Or possibly have a photo? If so, visit http://www.bwars.com/bombus_hypnorum_map.htm for further info on this bumblebee, how to recognise it, and details on how to report your sightings. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
