LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Each address contains the relevant date. Note: Views expressed by contributors are not necessarily those of the Lincolnshire Naturalists Union or any associated organisations. Please make contact via the LNU Website: http://www.lnu.org/ or e-mail wildlifenews@lnu.org, or contact the Editor to join up and contribute articles or reports. [Or cancel!] E-mail: rparsons@enterprise.net ============================================ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Readers hints, tips and requests ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** Finding the Bulletins *** LNU Wildnews Bulletins are available on: http://rogerparsons.info/bulletinportal.html Note: Each address contains the relevant date for that particular Bulletin. e.g. bulletin2009jul26.txt If you spot any typos, please let me know. Keep those reports coming. Thanks. Roger *** Harlequins *** Harlequin ladybirds may well try to come into your house to hibernate. Use the following website to report your records and drop a note to me for the Bulletin, please. The records for Lincolnshire look a bit thin on their distribution map. Harlequin Ladybird Survey To report your sightings: www.harlequin-survey.org/ *** Harlequin Ladybirds *** Marion Ellis writes: Braceby TF015353 As regards hibernating ladybirds, we have about 6 clumps which have come in through the landing window on the west side of the house. They are high up where the ceiling meets the wall so not possible to identify, but before the arrival of the harlequins we did not have this phenomenon. Ladybirds used to content themselves with settling in the cracks between the window and the frame. [Editor adds: this is typical of the Harlequins and you may notice a characteristic and somewhat unpleasant odour from the clump.] *** Donna Nook Seal Season *** Many readers will plan to pay a visit to the Grey Seal colony at Donna Nook this season. Breeding takes place in November and December, but Reserve Warden Rob Lidstone-Scott says there is no significant action yet. He wrote on 20th: 'The odd bull is appearing for a recce but no cows at the dunes yet.' Help with seal wardening is welcome. If interested I will be happy to pass your details to Rob. If you do plan a visit, I suggest that you avoid weekends, which are always very crowded, and go on a weekday instead. Donna Nook can be one of the coldest places in Lincolnshire, so check the forecast and dress accordingly. Check: http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/ Enter a local postcode: e.g. the Bay Horse pub is LN11. Pub website: http://www.thebayhorse-northsomercotes.co.uk/ It is a good idea to check the tides before you go, e.g. for Grimsby. http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/EasyTide/EasyTide/index.aspx For definitive information from the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, see: http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/nr/reserve.php?mapref=15 Non birders should look up a few likely species before going. e.g. shorelark, Lapland and snow bunting. You may well spot these. John Walker's list for Saltfleetby/Theddlethorpe will give you a good idea as to what to look out for. *** RSPB South Lincs *** Saturday 31st October at 10-00 a.m. - Guided Walk at Boston Cemetery. Meet at the car park next to the Crematorium for a gentle stroll through the oldest parts of the cemetery, where mature trees should be displaying their autumnal colours, and birds as diverse as goldcrest and various woodpeckers may be found. Suitable clothing for the prevailing weather should be worn as there will be no shelter for the duration of the walk, which should last about 2 hours. Bring your own binoculars if you have any, but a limited number may be available for loan for the duration of the event. Members of the local group will be leading the walk and will help to locate and identify the various species of flora and fauna seen, and to point out some of the more interesting features to be found in this section of the cemetery. There will be no charge for this event, which is open to all, both members and non members. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. Wildlife news from around the county ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *** The Roger Goy Column *** Remembering Roger Goy's wildlife information work. Possible Curlew? Carrie Morris asks: Is it likely that I saw a curlew today on the Fulletby to Horncastle road? I was driving along and this large bird with a very long downwards curved beak flew over the road in front of me. It looked silvery, but the sun was in front of me so colour was difficult to tell. I did think it was a heron at first, but it did not have the s shaped neck or the long legs behind, and the beak was amazing. It had a slow style to its flight. I'd not seen a bird like it here before. What do you think? [Note: Carrie has since seen a curlew on Autumnwatch and is fairly sure that is what it was.] *** County Wildlife Reports From Readers *** Please keep your reports coming, We rely on you to send in your observations and We welcome information from all readers, be they beginners or professionals. Notes about these wildlife reports ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We do our best to ensure accuracy in our reporting but these records are sent in by a variety of reporters, from complete beginners to professionals. They therefore vary in reliability and in certain cases they are impossible to verify. If further information is needed on locations or reporters, or if you wish to question/confirm any of these records, contact: rparsons@enterprise.net Bulletins are sent to Biological Recorders at the Lincs. Wildlife Trust, Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union and Lincolnshire Bird Club. [Note: Where plants are reported, this is usually because they have been seen "in flower".] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10. The Bulletin's publicity policy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We will not be giving precise details of the location of rare or endangered species. Please point out any sensitive or "tricky" reports of this kind. We ask that you respect the interests of wildlife and site owners if you report to national networks. Make a point of explaining site sensitivity and any restrictions on access. An interest in wildlife is not a licence to act irresponsibly/thoughtlessly to landowners, who may well be partners in important conservation work. [Remember - views expressed in the Bulletin do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions on the LNU or associated organisations. In particular this applies to such agencies, especially charities, taking a political stance.] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 11.
